Fort Robinson as Home Base??

We are planning a family trip to NW Nebraska %26amp; South Dakota this summer. (2 kids) Is it realistic to use the lodge at Fort Robinson State Park as a home base to explore the area, as well as visit Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument?

Also, we are interetsed in fossil hunting, and heard about a site in Denver/Utah. Any advice on travel in Neb/S. Dak area is appreciated!

thanks

Fort Robinson as Home Base??

I wouldn%26#39;t want to go back and forth from Ft. Rob to the Hills many times, but a couple times would be fine; it%26#39;s over an hour drive. Make sure you see Toadstool Park while you%26#39;re at Ft. Rob. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is worth the drive, too, if you%26#39;re fine with short drives. Also, Chadron State Park is good for hiking. It%26#39;s not too far from Scottsbluff , the Wildcat Hills, or Chimney Rock. In other words, if you%26#39;re seeing NW Nebraska and the Black Hills/Badlands, Ft. Rob is an excellent place to make home base. If you%26#39;re planning on spending most of your time in the Black Hills, it%26#39;s not so handy.
