driving thro NE, worried about weather

My husband and I plan to drive from the Midwest to southern California over a week. The major drive planned through NE is:

Omaha - Denver on Sunday Dec 21

I will be checking weather.com for updates. What is the best site for Nebraska weather %26amp; road conditions? If the date above raises a concern - due to weather or holidays - please let me know. Thank you.

They are usually pretty close! Looks like really cold so make sure you have warm stuff.

Road trip through Nebraska's I-80

Hello!

In June we will be taking a two week road trip through the US, which will take us through Nebraska. To have all answers concentrated in one place I%26#39;ve made a post with all the details in the Chicago forum, which is where our trip starts. Here is the thread:

…tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g35805-i32-k24330…

I know there has been some controversy so far over my choice of road trip itinerary. I myself have felt worried about it too, with the same concerns about driving lengths, but I really wanted us to be able to see and do as much as possible, and I%26#39;m hopeful that everything will work out and we will have an incredible trip. With your help it can be even better. :) I also apologize for calling Nebraska pretty boring -- I truly don%26#39;t mean to insult anyone from here. There are plenty of great things to see, I know, however with two weeks we%26#39;ve had to prioritize, and so NE is a place where we have not put much priority in. Like I mentioned though I would love to see a place or two a long the way, based on your suggestions. :)

Anyway so it%26#39;s easier to keep track of things, your suggestions in the thread linked to above would be great!

Thanks for the help!

Good restaurants in Omaha

Hi, looking to give a restaurant gift cert. to a relative living in Omaha that likes to go out to eat. I know there are a lot of great restaurants so looking for locals to give me tips on their favs.

Thanks!

Good restaurants in Omaha

Any chance you can narrow it down a little or provide a general type of restaurant you%26#39;re looking for?

Local place, non-Chain?

Steakhouse?

Italian?

Seafood?

Trendy?

Upscale?

Mexican?

Downtown? Out West?

Good restaurants in Omaha

Lo Sole Meo

Piccolos

Upstream Brewery

Greek Islands

Johnny%26#39;s Italian Steakhouse, a little bit of everything

Lo Sole Mio, excellent italian

Maria%26#39;s (Ralston) Mexican

Bohemian Cafe, heavy - old fashioned comfort food!

thanks for all the responses. My only narrowing down would be local, non-chain as the folks I am trying to find a gift for seem to like almost all types of foods. For cuisine, guess you can%26#39;t go wrong w/Italian, Mexican or steaks. Thanks!

I think all listed so far are no-chain. I immediately thought of Upstream as they have two locations, and we just enjoyed eating at Prestige World Class.

Agree with Upstream. There is now a Lazlo%26#39;s in Omaha that is good casual food and micro brewed beer, they also have a location in Lincoln.

Do they like a bit different food - Prima 140 perhaps? How about Belgian style with Dario%26#39;s Brasserie ?

Sports fans - Brewburgers for unusual burger selections, a lot of different beers and the game on TV.

Pasta in the old market - Vivace.....

Another vote for the Upstream, Lazlo%26#39;s, and Vivace%26#39;s.

I think one of the best places in Omaha to get a great steak is Anthony%26#39;s. There is no way to go wrong there. It is one of Omaha%26#39;s oldest steak houses if not the oldest. They just remodeled and it looks nice inside. I love Blue for Sushi. Lo Sole Mio or Vincenzo%26#39;s for Italian. Zio%26#39;s for the best pizza. Seafood would definately be Charlie%26#39;s on the Lake. Rick%26#39;s Boat Yard has good food but you are more there to be by the river and the new foot bridge. It is a great place to go eat when the weather is beautiful out or you have an event to go to downtown.

Thanks for all you great tips!!! I will check those restaurants online and order a gift certificate. Guess we need to go visit Omaha to eat! Some of the descriptions of these restaurants sound great!!!

Studio Plus Hotel?

So I got this hotel dirt cheap, but now it has me wondering if it might have been that cheap for a reason. How%26#39;s the location on Burt St? Is it in a decent area or should I expect my car to be jacked in the morning?

Studio Plus Hotel?

You should be fine there. It isn%26#39;t in a bad part of town.

Studio Plus Hotel?

I used to live across the street from this hotel in an apartment complex, and I currently go to a church about three blocks away from this hotel. No need to worry. Congrats on a good rate.

LOL ! Other than the drug dealers in the hallways you should be OK.

JUST KIDDING - location should be no problem and its actually quite a convenient location - its near Dodge, westbound you could get to I-680 in a few minutes or Regency Court shopping or the Westroads Mall. Go east on Dodge and it takes you right into downtown.

Driving I-80 from Chicago to Denver?

Tripadvisor forums have been a wealth of info to me in the past, hope for more to come.

I will be driving to Rocky Mountain N.P., and various other places in Colorado and New Mexico the first 2 weeks of July. I plan on driving on I-80 most of the way there but I am looking for suggestions on using some alternate routes along the way to get a ';feel'; for the state. I really don%26#39;t want to venture to far North or South from my ';heading west'; for the first time experience.

Definitely not looking for the tourist attractions, just a pleasant driving experience to break up the monotony of the highway. Just an experience of the topography and maybe what the small towns are like.

I don%26#39;t mean to ignore your states but I have to see the Rockies!

Thanks for any advice!

Driving I-80 from Chicago to Denver?

You could always just follow one of the highways that parallel I-80 (hwy 30 or 34) but it probably wouldn%26#39;t be worth the extra time due to lower speed limits and small towns. You would experience some small towns, but honestly, you would probably find it pretty boring (I can say that since I am a native Nebraskan lol).

A better option IMO if you can spare the time would be to take highway 2 NW out of Grand Island. Highway 2 will take you through the sandhills which are a unique landscape that have a certain desolate ';beauty'; http://www.sandhillsjourney.com .

Here are a couple of photos I took along Highway 2 during a very could February a few years ago; http://www.pbase.com/robt61x49/nebraska_hwy_2 . The sandhills are very unique and you will find a lot of very quaint small towns along the way.

I love Nebraska, but you are right not to waste too much time here on your way to CO. I%26#39;ve been there several times. RMNP is great - here are a few photos from my last visit there pbase.com/robt61x49/rocky_mountain_national_… and some fall color shots near Aspen from last September http://www.pbase.com/robt61x49/fall_colors .

Hope this helps.

Driving I-80 from Chicago to Denver?

robt61x49, That%26#39;s the kind of info I am looking for. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I will seriously consider your suggestions, sounds like it would give me a '; feel '; for the state.

Those were very nice pix. I hope I will be able to find some peace and nature in mid summer in RMNP. Looks like you might have

Thanks again, pizzaman.

Hotel with good bar/restaurant

Looking for a hotel in Omaha that has a great Bar.

Or any other good bars/lounges in the downtown area. Not looking for nightclubs or sports bars, but something someone in their thirties might enjoy.

Thanks for your help.

Hotel with good bar/restaurant

The Embassy Suites is across the street from the Old Market. There are a few bars that are within walking distance that would be enjoyed by someone in their 30%26#39;s.

Hotel with good bar/restaurant

I forgot to add the Old Market has a nice variety of good restaurants.

Thanks Megan. I actually meant to say near the Qwest Center, not downtown. Does that make a difference?

Thanks again for your reply.

If you%26#39;re going to an event at the Qwest, the bar at the Hilton across the street isn%26#39;t too bad. Can%26#39;t beat the location.

Mr. Toad%26#39;s in the Old market has kind of has a pub feel and is right across the street from the Embassy.

http://www.omahawiki.org/Mr._Toad%26#39;s

The Upstream Brewpub has two bars (one on the ground floor and one upstairs). They brew their own beer and they%26#39;ve always got a good crowd.

http://www.upstreambrewing.com/

The Old Market area is within walking distance to the Qwest Center. There is a Marriott Courtyard in between the Old Market and the Qwest Center. The hotel closest to the Qwest Center is the Hilton. I am 36 and love hanging out in the Old Market area. It has a variety of bars that are appealing to people in their 20%26#39;s, 30%26#39;s and 40%26#39;s+. I guess if you were looking for something specific such as a jazz or blues club you would have to specify but just to hang out I would rather go to the Old Market than hang out at the Hilton (too stuffy and boring for me). No matter where you stay all the hotels mentioned are fairly close (1/2 mile) to each other. I don%26#39;t think you could make a wrong choice. What are you going to be at the Qwest center for?? If it is a convention I would consider the Hilton just because you may be going back and forth but if it is for an event staying a bit closer to the Old Market wouldn%26#39;t make that big of a deal. There are also some hotels north of the Qwest but you are getting farther away from what I would refer to as ';the fun area';. Hope this helps.

Thank you guys for your replies. The Marriott sounds like a good compromise between the Qwest %26amp; Old Market.

Megan, I will be in Omaha in May for the Berkshire annual meeting.I have been there before, but have always stayed in the outskirts (once in Lincoln because it was the only place I could find a room). I would really prefer to actually get to know Omaha a little better this time.

Thank you both for your recommendations, its a great help.

Mr. Toad for evening drinks - Old Market%26#39;s oldest bar, the atmosphere is an old English pub. In summer months live jazz starts at 9:00pm

  • Furnas County Nebraska

My husband and I are thinking of moving from NC to NE. We were thinking somewhere in Furnas County. He has been hunting there a few years now and thinks it would be a good place for our kids. We have alot of gangs where we are right now. One of our daughters are at that age where we have to really watch who she hangs out with. There are 1300 kids on our high school. I know that is huge compaired to the schools there in Furnas County. The only thing is my husband is a teacher and I have not seen any openings for a high school science teacher or a PE K-12 teacher (he can do either). I was just wondering if anyone out there could give me there opinion on if this is a good idea to move and what to expect if we do. Also are teaching jobs hard to find in that area? What is the average salary for a teacher of 15 years there?

    Salary and Western Nebraska

can someone who makes 70 grand purchase a nice family home (3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms) in Western Omaha? And, if Western Omaha a really nice area? I have to decide if I really want to make that amount of cash and give up all that I have here in WV. Thank you all for your response.

    Salary and Western Nebraska

I think you could find a nice place in Omaha with that salary. Omaha%26#39;s got a lot of areas that would work for you.

Omaha%26#39;s got some pretty affordable houses (though we do have high property taxes).

Here%26#39;s a place in NW Omaha (just to give you an idea)

    www.cbshome.com/Listing/ListingDetail.aspx… st=141%26amp;Last=150%26amp;pagesize=10%26amp;SearchType=schooldistrict%26amp;ListingDistrictTypeID=2%26amp;FirstLetter=%26amp;Sort=1%26amp;Cookies=%26amp;UseColorBar=false

A 130K house in Omaha (with taxes and insurance) might run you between 1100 and 1200 a month (depending on your interest rate of course).

Omaha%26#39;s a nice town. Good schools and a good place to raise a family. Always something going on in the city to do.

    Good luck on your decision

    Salary and Western Nebraska

Well the house can afford is all different based on your net worth, down payment etc etc. But that being said - you can actually purchase new construction in west Omaha and Sarpy county starting at about $125 - 130K ( 3 BR 2 Ba 1200 Sq ft ).

Property Taxes will be higher if you are in the Elkhorn or Gretna school districts however.

The growth part of west Omaha is pretty much west of 156th street and pretty much every neighborhood is %26#39;nice%26#39; and all the schools are very good and there is plenty of shopping. Other nice areas are the Gretna area which is farther southwest and more convenient to Lincoln and the Elkhorn area that is at the west edge ( newly annexed by Omaha ) town.

Another area with a lot of growth would be the Papillion / La Vista area of Sarpy county, homes are similar and I think a little less in cost than West Omaha for the same house.

There are a lot of existing homes on the market in Omaha %26#39; near west %26#39; that are 20 - 50 years old as well.

Drop me a direct message if you want some more detailed info or contacts.

    West Omaha Question

Arriving Sunday evening and staying at the Holiday Inn Express in West Omaha. Wondering what a casual place to eat is around there - don%26#39;t want to venture too far and drive all over heck because we still have a long ways to drive after Omaha. Looking for something Americana - burger/sandwich/cold beer type place. Clean, appropriate for a pregnant lady!

    West Omaha Question

Upstream Brewery about 171st and Center is the first that comes to mind and isn%26#39;t far at all from your hotel.

    West Omaha Question

There is a lot of fast food and sit down in that area - Famous Dave%26#39;s BBQ, Upstream as was mentioned, Fox and Hound, Ruby Tuesday on 168th just north of center has a decent burger. Red Robin at 180th and center has good burgers.

Ended up going to Upstream - it was nice. Nothing fancy - a little expensive for what we got but overall pretty good.

    Nebraska

My husband and I are thinking of moving from NC to NE. We were thinking somewhere in Furnas County. He has been hunting there a few years now (Beaver City) and thinks it would be a good place for our kids.

    Nebraska

bkr21, as a lifelong resident of Nebraska and mother of two, I can tell you that it is a great place to live and raise a family. May I suggest that you don%26#39;t confine yourself to just Furnas County (it%26#39;s a great place, I grew up near there) but the whole of our state is equally great and I would think that a high school teacher should be able to find a teaching position in one of our many small towns. I%26#39;m not sure about average teacher salaries, but remember to weigh that salary figure against the cost of living here (which is probably considerably lower than where you are living now). I live in a town of 2500 and you could purchase a large 3/4 bedroom for under $100,000, as an example. Good luck in your search!

    Nebraska

You could contact the school supertendent of schools in towns where you might want to relocate. They should know if they will be having any vacancies for next year. McCook, NE might be a place to contact. Lexington, NE has quite a high crime rate. Kansas would also be an option. I don%26#39;t know about other taxes, but vehicle tax and gas tax are cheaper in Kansas.

What are the ';must sees'; at Henry Doorly Zoo?

We will be coming through Omaha in a few months and we would like to stop by the zoo, however, we will only have about 2 hours to spend there, as we will not be arriving until around 3;00pm. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we should definitely not miss there at the zoo?

    Thanks so much!

What are the ';must sees'; at Henry Doorly Zoo?

    Hi mamjuls,

The zoo has several truly special sights not to be missed - one of the top, if not THE top indoor rainforests in the world, an amazing walk through aquarium, and the Desert Dome. I%26#39;d start with the rainforest and then hit whatever else you have time for. The outdoor animal exhibits are also very good, if you have time for them. I%26#39;d suggest a visit to the IMAX theatre also, but with only two hours - go to the main zoo.

What are the ';must sees'; at Henry Doorly Zoo?

    Thanks for your help!

    Julie

My family loves the aquarium (which is right next to the rainforest/jungle).

I didn%26#39;t even know there was one. My son loves aquatic animals. We will have to stop there! Thanks.

In the aquarium there are many species of fish on display. Also, there is an exhibit of penquins. Another neat feature is the glass tunnel that you walk through with the sharks swimming on the other side of the glass.

Second the desert dome and don%26#39;t forget to go downstairs for creatures of the night.

The gorilla home is one of the newer buildings and offers some good viewing.

The nice thing is that the jungle, the desert dome %26amp; the aquarium are all located near each other near the front of the zoo. 2 hours is tight, but it can be done.

We will see what we can do. Thanks!

I agree - hit the rain forest, aquarium, desert dome, and the basement of the desert dome, which is the kingdom of the night (caves and swamp). They are all very close to each other. If there is one to skip because time is running out, I would skip the desert.

What's going on in Valentine, Nebraska on Valentine's Day?

I have searched as far as I can think of to learn about this little town. I was hoping to make a trip there just to be in Valentine on V-DAY! A little trivial but I thought it would be fun.

    Anyone have any info?

    Thanks

What's going on in Valentine, Nebraska on Valentine's Day?

I know you can send your mail there and have it postmarked. Not sure if it warrants a trip up though. Go in the summer and go canoeing on the Niobrara. Pretty fun and laid back. I believe it%26#39;s been rated one of the top rivers to canoe.

Also, don%26#39;t let the map fool you. This is easily an 8 hour drive, maybe closer to 10.

What's going on in Valentine, Nebraska on Valentine's Day?

Thanks for the info......';unclebobby'; I finally found out how far it is to go there......so disappointed. I will check into the mailing though.

Too bad to live so close to a place like this yet so far away!

Cool. I just checked mapquest and it says this is just over a 6 hour drive. I could have sworn it took longer than that. Maybe there was construction the last time I went. Oh well. Just hoping I didn%26#39;t give bad info.

Hey Brenna... I%26#39;m from Lincoln and it takes me about 5 to 6 hours to get to valentine... it%26#39;s really not too bad of a drive. However I go there all the time and I would have to say that the best time to go there would have to be around 4th of July... it%26#39;s crazy there and A LOT of fun! And if you do go up there - you HAVE to go tubing down the river... bring a group of friends cause it%26#39;s a blast!

TY so much for the responses to my e-mail. I%26#39;m still here in NE and think there just might be a chance to get a trip into Valentine. Also Ty for the info on the 4th. I%26#39;ll bet that it%26#39;s a ton of fun there then as well. I%26#39;m going to see if their Chamber of Commerce wil refer me to a shop or business that will let me buy the postcards from a distance.

You can get post cards sent to you from the Merritt Trading Post. They have several to choose from. The phone number is 402/376-3437.

Thanks so much for that info on the postcards! A great help!

Hello to all who happen to read this site. I am now in February 2007 and living on the I-80 south side of Chicago. There just wan%26#39;t enought itme to get in my visit to Valentime last year AND yes I%26#39;m still disappointed! I am going to call the Post Ofc to check on sending mail there and the Merritt sshop to check on postcards. I dropped the balll last year with all the ';events%26#39; that came along with trying to sell the house in Papillion and move here. Still there is just somehting that seems magical about going to Valentine on Valentine%26#39;s Day! Good luck to any of you who make the trip. It sounds like there%26#39;s soem interesting events that go on. I don%26#39;t know about any of you but we%26#39;re having 28- wind chill factors and over 6'; of snow......don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ll be venturing anywhere for now! Maybe during the spring thaw!

    HAPPY VALENTINE%26#39;S DAY %26lt;3

Just an add on here to anyone who might have an interest. I talked with the nicest people at the post office and tehn at Merritt%26#39;s Trading Post about mailing V-Day cards and finding postcards. You can send your pre-stamped cards and the PO will mail them for you! I think that%26#39;s very special.

Also the people at Merritt%26#39;s have a nice selection of ppostcards and I%26#39;m going to order some. I am interested in the area but also would like to send some special potcards that specifically have Valentine NE on them.

So.....just sharing and everyone have a special day.

  • Sandhill Crane Viewing

I am a nature photographer. I am looking for out of the way viewing locations for photographing the spring sandhill crane migration in Nebraska.

I understand Rowe Sanctuary is one of the best places to view cranes roosting on the river in the mornings and afternoons. Other than Rowe, can anyone suggest other prime viewing places/blinds. I know the back roads between Grand Island and Kearney are good for viewing cranes in the fields during the day.

Are there private land owners who cater to crane watchers/photographers along the Platte? Any suggestions?

    Sandhill Crane Viewing

A web site you might consult for more ideas of places to photograph cranes is:nebraskatravels.com/sandhill-crane-migration.

You could stop and ask a private land owner if they would be willing to let you enter their land and take pictures. I think some would if you ask first, maybe send them a gift later for their hospitabilty.

    Sandhill Crane Viewing

Do you know ';proper'; protocol for requesting permission to enter private property. Is it appropriate to just walk up, knock on their door and ask. I think if i were in their shoes that would make me uncomfortable

Yes, you could just stop at a landowner%26#39;s home, introduce yourself, tell them your purpose, and ask permission to walk on their property to take your pictures. If they say no, thank them and go try another owner.

I too am a nature photagrapher and budding birder....any suggestions on lodging in the area?? Have you heard of any local B%26amp;Bs that cater to birders during the Crane Migration??

I don%26#39;t know of any B%26amp;Bs but I have not looked. I do know that the hotels book up pretty quickly during the spring migration. This year (as well as last year) I stayed at Country Inns and Suites in Kearney. It is right off I-80 with lots of restaurants in the vicinity. As I recall, it is about a 20 minute drive to Rowe Sanctuary.

If you%26#39;re interested, here are two galleries of mine from 2007 and 2008 at Rowe:

    www.pbase.com/robt61x49/sandhill_cranes

Any luck on unique places to stay or best viewing locations Thurs. March 26-28, 2009?

I have blind reservations at Rowe Sanctuary, as I did last year. I plan to spend some time in between sessions scoping out other areas.

Last Friday and Saturday a juvenile whooping crane was spotted near the Platte River Whooping Crane Trust (exit 305) on I-80. Normally, the whooping cranes don%26#39;t migrate through NE until the first 2 weeks of April, following the sandhill cranes north.

On Sunday, an albino sandhill crane, one of 4 known albinos,in a population of 600,000 was seen.

South of exit 312 on I-80 there are roadside crane viewing sites.

I have gone up three different times and have been to both Rowe Sanctuary %26amp; Crane Meadows (reopening Monday as Wings Over the Platte). The photo oportunitues were far better at Rowe, but it still depends a bit on your luck in which blind you are assigned.

    Ogallala Information Trailer

A few years ago while travelling to Colorado by motorcycle, we stopped in Ogallala for a night. We met two very nice elderly ladies who were manning the tourist information trailer at the time. Their names were Fay %26amp; Gertrude. The trailer was just off the I-80 exit 126 I believe.

Late this coming summer we are going to Arizona via Colorado %26amp; Utah, and will be travelling through Ogallala once again. We thought that we would stop in say say hello.

Does anyone know if this trailer is still there and/or if these two ladies would still be there? I know this is a long shot, but you never know.

    Thank you.

    Rustic Timber homes

I%26#39;ve always wondered if their is a development with timber built homes that is in a rural rustic setting in or around Omaha, Nebraska.

    Rustic Timber homes

No, you might expect that in a north - woodsey place but not a place like Omaha.

    Rustic Timber homes

There was a development like this near Sioux Falls, SD, but haven%26#39;t been by it for years so I don%26#39;t know how rural it is now.

Can anybody tell me why I would want to move to Nebraska??? My husband may retire soon....we%26#39;re in our 50%26#39;s....I';ve always liked Timber style homes with the stone going on in the design..ya know the kind of home that looks like a vacation type home...I%26#39;m not crazy about a LOG home... does anybody know if theirs one for sale in Nebraska or if their are builders their that build those type of homes?? I';d like to live on the outskirts of Omaha or town nearby with a little acreage..some trees would be nice.

    Motels/Hotels along I-80

We have never been to or drove through Nebraska but we have Kansas back in 2002. In June we are taking a trip to YNP and the half way point from home to Yellowstone is around Grand Island. Our questions are: For those that have drove this interstate (or live there) are the motels/gas stations plentiful at each exit? Or are they located a few miles off the interstate in the towns? We are not planning on making any motel reservations around Grand Island, we are hoping to drive as far west as possible but looking at a map the towns west of Grand Island look very small, how are the motels %26amp; gas stations that way? Any info will be apperciated.

(When we went through Kansas in 2002 it was late at night and every exit we got off at had no motel and maybe 1 ';mom %26amp; pop'; gas station that had done closed, talk about ';driving on empty';)

    Motels/Hotels along I-80

There is a good selection of hotels in Kearney, exit-272 %26amp; Ogallala, exit-126. We have stopped in both towns during our travels in 2006.

North Platte, exit-177, offers up a good selection as well.

I do not think that you will have anything to worry about.

This link will help with gas stations along your route:

    http://www.nebraskagasprices.com/

    Motels/Hotels along I-80

The eastern part of I80 there are hotels at 50% of the exits. As you travel west especially after Kearney the hotels are fewer except the cities mentioned above and around touristy stops, Paxton, Sidney. Alot of the exits don%26#39;t have gas station nearby.

This site may help locate hotels www.visitnebraska.gov.

If you plan on stopping at Grand Island, there are plenty of hotels. Take the Locust Street Exit, the first one for Grand Island and you will find plenty of options.

The only problem I have with taking the Locust Street exit in Grand Island is that the hotels/motels are IN Grand Island, about 7 miles from the interstate. There are filling stations, motels, and restaurants located by the interstate at exit 312.

But I think the poster said he was thinking of driving west of Grand Island. I%26#39;m not as familiar with those towns. Most towns have gas stations and a few restaurants, especially fast food restaurants close to the interstate.

Thanks everybody! We are hoping to get west of Grand Island. From home to Grand Island is about 12 or 13 hour drive and not real sure how far it is from there to West Yellowstone MT. (where we are headed) But that 1ST day we are wanting to drive as far as possible.

    A New Favorite Reaturant

I have a new favorite restaurant. It%26#39; called Mangia Italiana and it%26#39;s on Irvington Road. Really good, big portions and inexpensive. Anyone else out there who wants to name an Omaha or Omaha area favorite that I should visit?

    A New Favorite Reaturant

Never heard of it - please give location and what you had that you liked so much !

What kind of food / restaraunts are you looking for?

    A New Favorite Reaturant

Mangia Italiana is on 6516 Irvington Rd. I like homestyle ethnic food.

I wrote a review of Mangia Italiana if you want to check it out.

Awesome food! You gotta try it!

Out west but well worth the drive

There is a restaurant out in west omaha that is without question one of my top five in Omaha. Prestige is a lot like a country club. It overlooks a public golf course and has an amazing patio view of one of their lakes. Food is excellent especially now that they have a new executive chef. He came from Taste restaurant and is really, really good.

    www.PrestigeWorldClass.com

I am from Phoenix and always make a point to put Prestige on my list of places to go when I am in town on business which is about once a month.

Out west but well worth the drive

AGREE :) They have specials every night (food %26amp; drink)

Anyone stay in the Settle Inn before?

Are the theme rooms worth it at the BW Settle Inn in Omaha? Are some cool and others creepy? My wife kinda wants to stay there this weekend.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Anyone stay in the Settle Inn before?

Did you stay there? If so how was it?

    Holiday Inn Express Omaha West

Hi! Has anyone stayed here? If so, how is the breakfast that is included? I was told it is a full breakfast, not continental. Also-are the rooms nice? We have booked a suite w/2 queen beds and a full pull-out couch...just wondering if the room will be ';cozy'; with 2 beds and a couch in it?

    Thanks for any input!!

    Holiday Inn Express Omaha West

Breakfast is nice Definitly more than continental. Had some cereal, eggs, bacon, cinamin rolls, doughnuts, yogurt etc.

    Have just seen basic rooms.

    Hotel with good Bar/Restaurant

Looking for a hotel downtown Lincoln, that has a great Bar.

Or any other good bars/lounges in the downtown area. Not looking for nightclubs or sports bars, but something someone in their thirties might enjoy.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hotel with good Bar/Restaurant

I suggest staying at the Embassy Suites or Holiday Inn. Both are located downtown, have restaurants/bars attached but are also walking distance to several other area restaurants and bars.

    Hotel with good Bar/Restaurant

Thanks brooklyn, I appreciate the response.

I think that sounds like a good idea.

Downtown Omaha hotel with outdoor pool?

I%26#39;m going to be in Omaha for a weekend in July and would enjoy finding a hotel downtown with an outdoor pool. The wedding we%26#39;re attending has a block of rooms reserved at the Hilton, but they have an indoor pool. It it%26#39;s hot and sunny, we%26#39;d like to relax outdoors. Any suggestions appreciated.

Downtown Omaha hotel with outdoor pool?

I am not aware of one downtown that has an outside pool! Homewood Suite鈥檚 is on a corner and looked like you could step outside easier. The room has huge bed in separate room. Large living room had pull-out couch but plenty of room. Flat screen tvs in both rooms. Had small kitchen area %26amp; table. It would be great w/kids. We hope to stay there again!

I don%26#39;t like how Hilton has their pool setup, you have no choice but to walk in front of front desk to get to pool %26amp; exercise area.

Downtown Omaha hotel with outdoor pool?

Thanks. Do you know how close the Homewood Suites is to the Hilton? I%26#39;m traveling with two other women, and it would be nice to have a suite with two rooms, but we need to get to the Hilton to meet up with the other guests and to catch a shuttle to the wedding.

It is across a large parking lot, look up the hotel here on TA then on the map option, should show both hotels. It is walkable but longer than you think. Now there is construction in that area that may make walking difficult.

Homewood is a hilton brand %26amp; they all share a free shuttle downtown. So when you check-in make sure to reserve the time you may need it, the busy times fill up fast. Have Fun!!

    Old Mill area of Omaha

I will be in Omaha with a colleague for a conference at the Crowne Plaze Old Mill Jan. 29-Feb. 1. We are looking for good food and fun shopping close by. We are from a very outdoorsy, rural mountain west area and so are just happy to have choices. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks@

    Old Mill area of Omaha

There are several to choose from with the Westroads Shopping center a short drive with restaurants around it like PF Changs, Chesecake Factory plus a few others.

    Old Mill area of Omaha

You could also head just a bit farther west on W.Dodge Rd at the Boys Town exit you will find Biaggi%26#39;s, Charleston%26#39;s, and Ted%26#39;s Nebraska Grille. All three are really nice restaurants IMO. Biaggi%26#39;s is italian. Charleston%26#39;s is rather eclectic as I remember and Ted%26#39;s is all about steak (beef or bison) and hambergers.

The previous poster was right about Westroads, but another ';mall'; option at 168th and W.Dodge is Village Pointe.

Don%26#39;t forget Granite City Brewery at the Westroads complex - good beer brewed on premises, good burgers.

Regency Court is nearby with the famous Borsheim%26#39;s Jewelry store and a few high end shoppes as well as One Pacific Place on Regency Drive and Pacific St. has some nice shops and California Pizza Kitchen and other places to eat.

For some fun maybe consider: Dave and Busters - 2502 South 133rd Plaza, Suite 111 Omaha , NE 68144 402-778-3915

Any suggestions for bars in this area?

Granite city is good for microbrews and food.

For a more traditional bar scene head just west to 114 th street and go north - there are strip malls on both sides of 114th street on the west side of 114th just north of Dodge you have Club Patrick%26#39;s and 2 or 3 other bars, on the west side of the street there is DJ%26#39;s dugout sports bar and I think one more.

Where should I live in Omaha????

I am wondering where would be a nice safe place for a family with 3 young kids to live in Omaha? We will be living there for about six months and would like an area that would be family friendly with parks, etc. Any suggestions let me know! Thanks!

Where should I live in Omaha????

Several neighborhoods around town are normally safe Dundee, Papillion, Millard and Bennington are starters.

Where should I live in Omaha????

Papillion is a nice area for families. The schools are good. There are a lot of activities and sports for children in the area. District 66 (school district) area is very nice. The schools are nice and it is centrally located in Omaha (Approx 72nd to 114th from Center to Dodge area. Millard is also a hub for families. I would not recommend Dundee as posted above. There has been instances of violence in that area in the last year.

The good news is that there are a LOT of neighborhoods that would fit your needs. The main consideration might be where are you going to want to be close to? Do you want a short commute to a certain part of the city or does that not bother you. I will throw my hat in for the Gretna Area of Sarpy county also but the suggestions made are also good. Its a good place to raise a family and nice suburban areas and there are nice areas to live that are in the city closer to downtown as well.

Like any city , there are also areas to avoid!

  • 1st time visitor needs casino advice

I realize the casino%26#39;s are across the river.Im a first time visitor coming to the area.I would like to know which of the casinos%26#39;s would be best for me to visit.Im interested in the one that may have live music, great bar/lounge.good lodging. Also,it appears the 3 casino%26#39;s Im aware of are within a couple miles of each other,is that true? What type of transportation is available to be transported to each of the casino%26#39;s,or can you walk to each of them? Thanks for your help

1st time visitor needs casino advice

All of the casinos typically have some form of musical entertainment. I would check with the web sites to see what would be playing while you are in town. Harrah%26#39;s has the popular concert area called Stir Concert Cove. The Horseshoe casino also has bands that play in the bar. Ameristar has a sports bar that offers live music. Ameristar casino has a shuttle that will take you over to the Horseshoe casino and back. Ameristar also has a swimming pool where Harrah%26#39;s doesn%26#39;t. The Horseshoe doesn%26#39;t have their own hotel. I forget the name of the place but it is across a parking lot from the Horseshoe. I would either stay at Ameristar or Harrah%26#39;s. I tend to like Ameristar better than Harrah%26#39;s but would stay at Harrah%26#39;s depending on the band playing there at the time.

1st time visitor needs casino advice

The casinos are close but not within walking distance. There is a shuttle that runs between the Horseshoe ( the newest and not a riverboat ) and Harrah%26#39;s.

Harrah%26#39;s is the bottom end casino - lowest limits and a bit sparse. They do have great concerts though as was posted. They have $3 BlackJack and Craps and good Video Poker on the top deck.

Ameristar has a great sports bar - good appetizers, lots of TV%26#39;s and a good bar. The boat is connected to a Hotel with a buffet and an upscale restaurant that is very good ( Waterfront ). I like it a lot. Gambling is good there too with $5 limit tables and 9/6 video poker. Live music in the sports bar - check their website for the bands - pretty good - they stopped having live music in the casino last year.

The Hosershoe is a nice Vegas style one floor casino with a dog track and horse betting. Higher limits here and tighter slots but its a nice place. They have live bands in the Whiskey Roadhouse - see their website for the schedule.

Thanks for both of your replies.

    unique nebraska for kids

Hi. We take our kids to two new states every year and this year is Nebraska and Kansas. My kids will be 6, 3, and 6 months in June.

We visit each state for their unique history, etc. We live near Philadelphia so big city things have already been done.

I know we should go to Chimney Rock and we plan on going to the zoo in Omaha and the children%26#39;s museum in lincoln. They are pretty much on the list just ot break up the trip because we have similar things in Philadelphia already.

We aren%26#39;t really into sports to the disappointment of my grandmother who lives near Omaha. We are focused on history...we try to get to National Historic landmarks, parks, etc.

If you have a great restaurant that%26#39;s kid-friendly near any of the landmark suggestions, I%26#39;d appreciate it!

    unique nebraska for kids

If you%26#39;ll be in the western part of the state check out Fort Robinson, Toadstool Park, Hudson-Meng Bison kill site, or Agate Fossil Beds. If it works out, you really should see the Sand Hills (could pick a route to drive through them on your way to Omaha). Some ranches also offer accomodations and it might be neat to see a working ranch (if you haven%26#39;t seen that type of thing before).

    unique nebraska for kids

If you are really into history, a nice stop in the middle of Nebraska (if you are doing Hwy 30 or Hwy 34 or I-80) is Stuhr Museum in Grand Island. It%26#39;s a fabulous living history museum. The main building was designed by Edward Durrell Stone and is a fabulous museum in and of itself. However, the real Gem of this museum is Railroad Town. It is staffed from May 1 through Oct. 1 with fabulous ';interpreters'; and really gives you a feel of what it was like to live 110 years ago, when Nebraska towns were first springing up.

Runza is a local chain with runza%26#39;s that are oven baked stuffed sandwiches with ground beef.

West of Beatrice, which is 45 minutes south of Lincoln, you could visit the Homestead National Monument. Here you can visit a new visitor%26#39;s center that is shaped like a sod-buster plow, tour a one-room school, walk on trails in the prairie, and view exhibits that pertain to the Homestead Act.

Between Lincoln and Omaha, exit 426 SAC Museum is a great place to stop. Here you can view various aircraft and the kids can even climb in a few. They also have a traveling exhibit. It is all enclosed in an air-conditioned building. Just down the road is the Mahoney State Park where you could ride horses, go to the water park, walk trails along the Platte River, play in the kids activity area, ride paddle boats. At Mahoney is a lodge that is kid friendly for a place to eat. Ask for a table by a window to view the hummingbirds eating at the hummingbird feeder hanging from the building. If you drive down the road, just a little farther and on the south side of I-80 is the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari where you can view bison, elk, wolves, etc. on a drive through road that includes prairie and wetlands.

One place that my kids really like in Omaha is the Durham Museum.

    http://www.durhammuseum.org/

The building that houses the museum is an old train station. There is a real old time train and street car in the lower level that the kids are allowed to explore. There is also a large train model that the kids will enjoy. There is a nice area that shows kids what things like during the times past of the old midwest. It is not a stuffy museum and very family friendly. It would take about half a day to visit. There is also an old time soda fountain that you could have lunch at. They also sell candies that are definately blasts from the past. My children are now 9 and 7 and still love to visit the Durham we have been taking my son since he was 2.

Also on I-80 is a bridge near Kearney, Nebraska that runs over the interstate. Housed in/on that bridge is a museum that talks about the history of Nebraska and the migration of settlers across Nebraska and the Native Americans they met. There is not a link for a web site but here is the trip advisor page:

    tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g45649-d12…

I have never taken my kids here but my father thought it would be a place that they would enjoy. I think the good thing about this location is that it is about 3.5 hours outside Omaha and would make a good place to stop with the little ones who may need to burn off some energy.

As for place%26#39;s to eat...in Lincoln we like to go to the Runza right near the Children%26#39;s Museum. It is within walking distance (less than a block) and the waitresses wear roller skates. It has a Rock and Roll theme to it. As for the zoo, you can always eat at the restaurant there but it will cost you. You can take a cooler into the zoo if you would like to pack a picnic lunch. We put ours in a wagon if we end up going the picnic route. Make sure you take some wet wipes so you can clean off a picnic table though. There are a lot of resturants in the Old Market which are very close to the Durham museum and not too far from the zoo. If you are traveling I-80 to get to Chimney Rock a fun place to stop for lunch is Ollie%26#39;s Big Game Bar in Paxton, Nebraska. This restaurant/bar houses a huge collection of stuffed (real) animals. The kids love to walk around and look at all the species while we wait for our meals. It is just one of those fun off the wall places to stop.

The rock n roll Runza closed several years ago. Their are 14 other Runza%26#39;s in town, but none in the downtown/haymarket area.

The Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City might be a good stop. It is essentially a walking trail with a tree house and some really huge marimbas thrown in. We have a 2.5 yr old and she loves to play the marimbas as well as walk and hop on various log balance beams and ';stepping stumps';. I don%26#39;t know your route or if this would be out of your way, but it%26#39;s a proven winner for our child.

If you%26#39;re interested in fossils, etc...you could also try Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park (mammoths and rhinos). They are doing construction on the structure over some of the fossil beds, so I don%26#39;t know if it will be open by next summer. We haven%26#39;t been there as of yet, but it is on our to do list for this summer.

Good places to go in Nebraska:

    -Morrill Hall, with its fossils

    -Stuhr museum, as mentioned

    -Ashfalls Fossil beds

    -Fort Robinson

    -Chimney Rock

The State Capitol is worth a visit, especially if you take one of the almost hourly tours. Their library is beautiful.

You might also want to see Carhenge or the archway by Kearney.

Here%26#39;s a site with some suggestion for trips and ideas on where to go:

There is usually one restaurant in most NE small towns. Hyannis has the Hyannis Hotel that serves meals, but it is closed on Sundays. The hours for restaurants in very small towns is that they usually close around 2p.m. on Sundays. Alliance hours would be longer and more of a selection of restaurants.

    Romantic hotels in Omaha

    Hi!

The Magnolia (formerly Sheraton when we stayed there) has nice suites with large whirlpool tub in the bathroom. The room we had opened into the central garden/courtyard. It is a historic building with lots of charm at that time.

Across the river AmeriStar has rooms with whirlpool out in the guest room.

Those are the ones I am familiar with, hope someone has more info for you, welcome home!!

    Romantic hotels in Omaha

    I appreciate your help. Thanks

The absolute best (and I have searched!)is at Ameristar, I think it is called the ';Quad'; room (there are only 4). It has a huge jacuzzi, a platform King canopy bed, a marble bathroom, a fireplace, and a great view of the river and Omaha downtown. I know they will give you a special rate if you explain the circumstances (usually runs about 225 / noc). This is an awesome room, not at all tacky, just very elegant and romantic, You will take her breath away. I know it.

This one isn%26#39;t in Omaha but maybe more along what you asked for and given it%26#39;s in KC you could also do a nice restaurant there.

    http://www.chateauavalonhotel.com/

I%26#39;ll second the Magnolia recommendation. Very cool hotel with a nice blend of modernity and historic feel. I haven%26#39;t spent the night there, but have been in the building several times when relatives were staying there. Its on 16th and Howard, so you%26#39;re just a few blocks from a romantic dinner in the old market (I would suggest Nicola%26#39;s for Italian, Vivace is good too). Good Luck with the search!

I will also agree with Ameristar. The octogon rooms are amazing. It is a suite with a sitting area and a king size bedroom. In the bedroom is a large tub that overlooks the Missouri river. The rooms are gorgeous. There is a good steak resturant on the main level of the hotel. You could also stay for the amazing Sunday brunch if you stay on a Saturday night.

Thank you all for the the help. It was very helpful to get some good info from you all.

    Thanks, nuch

Lodging and food- near Grand Island

    Hello-

We will be traveling from MN to Denver at the end of May. Looks like Grand Island would be about half-way and a place to stay overnight.

Any suggestions for a clean, safe place to stay off of I-80? Any recommendations for a place to eat?

    Thanks for your help.

Lodging and food- near Grand Island

Grandma Max%26#39;s truckstop, near I-80 has an excellent restaurant. There is also an Arby%26#39;s at the exit.

As far as hotels go, choices are limited unless you drive into Grand Island itself, about 6 - 8 miles off the interstate, depending on which exit you take. There is a Holiday Inn (with a restaurant) and a Holiday Inn Express at the interstate, and another budget hotel near the truck stop just north of the interstate. Your choices broaden if you drive into the town itself. Will you have time to go into Grand Island, maybe see some of the sights in town, like Stuhr Museum? or is this just a stop for a meal and a bed? Any stores, such as WalMart, are in town. There is a gas station by the interstate, and then that truckstop i mentioned.

    Thanks,gibby2 for the information.

Sounds like a good place to eat.

    Thanks!

Omaha Zoo and Comfort Inn Review

I%26#39;ve put together a little page with info about our recent trip to Omaha and the Henry Doorly Zoo. We stayed at the Comfort Inn at the Zoo.

If you find it helpful leave me a comment on my site, I%26#39;m trying to make a little blog about each place we travel to, a little personal travel guide, or something like that.

Anybody coming to town for Berkshire Meeting this weekend?

If anybody has questions about the shareholder events or what to do in Omaha, please let us know.

Couple of quick tips, if you want a seat in the arena, I%26#39;d recommend getting there by 7:00 when the doors open. Otherwise you might get stuck in the overflow rooms in the convention center.

If you%26#39;re by yourself or a group of two, you probably don%26#39;t need to be content on sitting in the back if that looks to be the only place open. Seems like there are always one or two seats together closer to the front where people leave space because they don%26#39;t want to sit by anybody. If you just ask if it%26#39;s saved, you should have pretty good luck.

    Anything going on this weekend?

Room rates seem kind of high may 1-2...

  • Need restaurant recommendation

We%26#39;re coming to Omaha for the BH annual meeting, and are looking for restaurant recommendations for Friday May 1. We%26#39;re staying at the Holiday Inn Convention Center (S. 72nd St). Ideally we%26#39;d like a local restaurant, not a chain. We are 4 adults that like diverse food, not necessarily steak, upscale is ok. We%26#39;d like to avoid the crowds in Old Market (or at Gorat%26#39;s). Your help is appreciated.

    Look up:

    Prestige World Class

    Prima 140

    Dario%26#39;s Brasserie

They might be what you are looking for.

    Spezia for Italian

Binion%26#39;s Steakhouse at the Horseshoe Casino in the Bluffs if you are looking for great food and a little gaming action - or the Waterfront Grill in the Ameristar for that matter.

    Johnny%26#39;s has good steaks.

I%26#39;ve heard Jams Bar %26amp; Grill is great.

    Visit their website www.jamseats.com/

I%26#39;ve been told they have great daily specials %26amp; really fresh seafood.

Upstream Brewery is really good %26amp; you can steer clear of the Old Market %26amp; go to their west location on 171st %26amp; Maple.

    Just my two cents!

A new one for us that was excellent 94/95 Sports Grille. It is not listed yet on TA yet so here is some info I found on the web.

I had the Mediterranean Pasta at $9 had a huge portion, it was super. My DH had the backyard burger with fries, awesome. Waiters recommendation for wine was a hit as well. Next visit can%26#39;t get here soon enough!!

Thanks for the recommendations. We ate at Darios, and it was the right choice. Nice neighborhood restaurant off the beaten tourist path. Great food, tasty and not too heavy. (I had trout; others had mussels or mushroom crepes). Extensive beer list. Nice casual clothes fit right in. The only downside was the parking: very limited parking in the area. We should have planned extra time to circle the block. All in all, though, a terrific meal in a fun setting. Thanks.

    Things to Do

My husband and I will be traveling through Lincoln and Omaha. What is there to do in these areas?

    Things to Do

What do you like to do? How long do you have? Indoors or outdoors? What month are you coming?

    Things to Do

SAC Museum, Mahoney State Park, Lee Simmons Safari are halfway between Lincoln and Omaha on the Platte River bluff.

Omaha%26#39;s Henry Doorly Zoo, Durham Western Heritage Museum, Old Market area.

I reccomend the zoo. It is great for both adults and kids! My husband and I used to go even before we had kids!

';Pros and Cons moving from SoFlo to Omaha? any advice

    Hi everybody!!

We are thinking moving out to Omaha or Lincoln. We are a latin/hispanic family with a 4 year old daughter and with other baby to come. The more important for us is the education for our kids and the economy of the city. We want a non-violent city and to live in a good neighborhood close to supermarkets and shopping malls. We don%26#39;t care about clubs, concerts or anything like that. We just want to work and have a peaceful lifestyle.

For now we want to rent in a nice area where our child can go to a good school and my husband can find a good job, He has been in the meat industry for more 20 years, if anyone knows where he can find work, please let us know.

I would highly appreciate any advice you can give me. And something very important to know is if the population of these cities discriminate hispanics.

    Thank you!

';Pros and Cons moving from SoFlo to Omaha? any advice

I%26#39;m not sure what the meat industry is like in Lincoln or Omaha.

I know Grand Island has at least one packing plant-Monfort%26#39;s. It%26#39;s a smaller community-45K or so. It%26#39;s also kind of a shopping hub for rural South Central Nebraska, so the economy is decent. All of the schools there are pretty good, and it%26#39;s pretty non-violent.

There%26#39;s also a relatively large Hispanic population in GI relative to other parts of the state. However, Nebraska is a very white state in general. I think I remember an article in a newspaper talking about how one minority saw explicit racism in the south compared to an implied racism here (being called a racial slur vs. someone pretending not to see them). There are racists in NE, but I think they%26#39;d be more likely to complain behind your back than say or do anything to you.

';Pros and Cons moving from SoFlo to Omaha? any advice

What type of work in the meat industry may make some difference but So Omaha still has some and there are some close by.

The school systems are rather mixed in the Omaha metro as you have three public school districts in the city.

Calisouth ~ I think you would find that Nebraska is a very welcoming and nice place to live. I%26#39;m not as familiar with Omaha, but Lincoln has many diverse neighborhoods (including hispanic) and you would be close to everything on your wish list. Be aware that a car is pretty essential here, most everyone drives. There are metro bus systems in both Omaha and Lincoln, but I%26#39;d still want to have a car.

As others have said, the meat-packing industry isn%26#39;t huge in either city, but more in places like Grand Island and Lexington. Don%26#39;t dismiss the smaller cities in Nebraska, just because they are smaller. You might find that you would love living there. Lexington%26#39;s population is now over 50% Hispanic.

Nebraska hasn%26#39;t been as affected by the economic downturn across the country, so jobs are available. This website lists meat industry companies located in the state: manta.com/mb_44_C300B_28/…nebraska

I applaud you for wanting to move and provide a safe place for your family. Come check out Nebraska. We%26#39;d love to have you.

    Advice:

    1. Visit here before you make your decision

    2. Don%26#39;t move anywhere until you have a firm job offer in the new location.

    3. Understand the climate/ weather difference between Omaha and what you are used to.

Omaha is like any other large city. As you move downward in housing costs in a neighborhood, you get more problems and more crime - just a fact of life. There are bad neighborhoods and gangs in Omaha just like anywhere else - especially in the near north side and near south sides. The suburban and far suburban areas are great places to live with great schools. You can read the Omaha paper online to get a feel for some of this - omaha.com

A lot of hispanics live in Lincoln. Some work in Lincoln and others commute to Crete to work at Farmland. Crete has a large percentage of people with hispanic heritage. Grand Island has a large crime rate compared to their size.

Traveling across the state on highway 80

THe first week of August we will be in route with our youth mission trip across Nebraska. They are aged 14-18 could anyone give us interesting places to stop annd take a break. We will be with a coach bus. I have already the Sand crane viewing area in Grand Island,River Road Archway,Bufallo Bill Ranch,Sod house and Front Street. Am I missing some thing also if someone knows of anyplace we could tie some religion in would be great.

Traveling across the state on highway 80

The crane season is now, early spring, there will be other birds/wildlife to view in August but not the number. Nebraska’s tourism site www.visitnebraska.gov Some others to add to the list:

Stuhr Museum, Grand Island. They have an outdoors 1880 Town setup, also includes a country church. It has been used for movie set for few movies including Sarah Plain %26amp; Tall. www.stuhrmuseum.org

Cabelas, Sidney. That is the worldwide headquarters.

Oles, Paxton. We usually stop for lunch, it is an old tavern with all kinds of stuffed (as in taxidermy) animals including a polar bear, and others you can stand next to www.olesbiggame.com

Runza is a fast food restaurant chain in Nebraska with great burgers, fries %26amp; onion rings. A runza is meat mixture baked in bread, like a mini calzone.

Traveling across the state on highway 80

    Oh, definitely go to Runza.

The Hall County Fair (in Grand Island) is Aug 6-9.

There%26#39;s Pioneer Village as well, as seen in About Schmidt.

I don%26#39;t know where you going. Along I-80, I assume, but Ashfalls with its fossil beds is really interesting, though out of the way.

And Carhenge for religion, perhaps? :P

This site has suggested group tours which should help:

If its a Catholic group you could stop at the Holy Family Shrine off I-80 near Gretna.

The SAC museum near Ashland is great, but its a great science and technology thing - the boys would especially like that.

In the fall 80,000 or so gather on many Saturdays in Lincoln, to pray that the Huskers win.

    Thank you all so much

www.holyfamilyshrine.com The Holy Family Shrine is located between Omaha and Lincoln off I-80, exit 432-south on Hwy 31 (1.3 miles) west on Pflug Road (1 mile). This might be something of interest for you, even if you aren%26#39;t Catholic.

Like another poster mentioned is the Stuhr Museum. A great place to stretch the legs while learning some US history.

Carhenge isn%26#39;t remotely religious, just a bunch of cars piled on top of each other.

Marantha Camp is located at Maxwell, NE east of North Platte. They hold camps there all summer, but might let your kids join the campers in some activities. If they aren%26#39;t full, some beds might be available for a night.

    Best Burger?

    Hello!

Where in Omaha would I find the best (non-chain) burger?

    thanks!

    Best Burger?

A little mom n pop bar called Stellas in Bellevue.. Just outside of Omaha has the best home made burgers in the world.

    Best Burger?

    Hey dman,

how about Goldbergs, either on 132nd and Center or 50th and Dodge?

Also have to get a malt for desert!!!

    Mmmmm.

    Goldbergs. Those are tasty burgers.

The new Lazlo%26#39;s on 192nd Street just north of Center has a good burger - although its kind of a chain. Granite City at the Westroads has a good burger as well. King Kong is a local outfit with a few locations 72nd and Q , and 40 something and Dodge- they have quite good burgers as well as Gyros. Goldbergs as was mentioned has a decent burger.

We were disappointed with the Scarlet and Cream Letter club sports bar near Village Point.

Red Robin has some good selections as well.

I dont hit many non chains it seems - there are not a lot of mom and pop joints being built - just the big boys.

More good choices.. I do concur, especially about King Kong.

    Top three are.....

Stellas.. Goldbergs.. and King Kong. I%26#39;m not gonna try to rank them in any sort of order... All three are great choices.

Thanks everyone! I had King Kong on my list but will let you know how it went with the others.

stellas is crap - fuddruckers is awesome

I%26#39;d put a vote in for Dinkers in downtown Omaha. Stellas is excellent too.

What about Louie M%26#39;s Burger Lust on 15th and Vinton?

Goldberg%26#39;s at 50th and Dodge. They also have the best Bloody Marys by far of anywhere I%26#39;ve been.

    Trails Inn Motel in Beemer

Can anyone tell me anything about the Trails Inn Motel, 206 Main St, Beemer, Nebraska - (402) 528-3235‎? It is the only lodging in Beemer and I%26#39;m trying to decide whether to stay somewhere out of town instead. I%26#39;m not a snoot and my standards are somewhat low, but would like to at least see a picture of a place before deciding. The trip is for genealogical purposes. Thanks!

    Trails Inn Motel in Beemer

It would be better to stay in West Point, NE (about 15 miles)or Fremont (about 40 miles)than stay at the motel in Beemer. My husband has stayed in the Super 8 motel in West Point several times. It isn%26#39;t anything fancy, but it serves the purpose of a bed. They also have a free continental breakfast and free

high speed internet. We hope this info helps.

    Trails Inn Motel in Beemer

    Yes it does, thank you!

Going to Billy Joel/Elton John concert tonight - want fun good restaurant near Qwest Center - any suggestions?

    restaurants near Qwest Center

Probably depends on high close you want to be to the Qwest. The Old Mattress Factory is really close and I imagine it%26#39;ll have a good atmosphere prior to the concert due to its location. Good food and service.

The Old Market will be busy all around due to the concert, so allow plenty of time to park, walk, eat, and get to the Qwest.

thanks! Is the Anchor Inn close and is it open during the week and does it serve food? I%26#39;ve always heard that it is a fun place to go..thanks again for the help!

Anchor Inn is a short drive, but not walkable. Bar atmoshere with concerts! Drinks are good, can%26#39;t vouch for food. http://www.anchorinnbar.com

In the Old Market there are many good ones, Upstream, Billy Froggs, Vincenzos, Julios to name just a few that we have tried. Here is good website: http://www.oldmarket.com/index.asp

Across the river is Islamorada Fish Co in the Bass Pro Shop. Good seafood!

Omaha in June for Baseball Tourney

We will be in Omaha in June for youth baseball. Our group will have adults as well as children aged 13 down to 8. There will be times when only some of the families will eat together (approx 30 people) but we%26#39;d like to get everyone together once at one location if we can - 60 people or so. Can anyone suggest restaurants for both small and large groups? Thanks much.

We%26#39;ll be there too! Interested to see the response.

Baseball Tourney-what to do with teens?

Hi, we%26#39;ll be in town for those Baseball tournaments . And I%26#39;d like some suggestions for the Boys to do as well as info on things to do for the adults too! Thanks!

Adult Nightlife near Embassy Suites Omaha-La Vista

Can anyone suggest a place to go for a few drinks and some food not too far from the Embassy Suites Omaha-La Vista? Perhaps a brewery? We will have cars.

Advice on Picking Up College World Series Tickets

I will be in Omaha June 11-13 with my wife and 15 month old. We would like to go to game 1 of the college world series but I really cannot determine the best way to get tickets. It appears that StubHub will sell you a ticket for around $70 or so. Are there going to be any more limited ticket sales in March or April. I don%26#39;t think that I want to go the general admission route because we would probably have to get there really early in the morning for a 1PM game...

Also, will the zoo just be too crazy to go to the day before (Friday the 12th)? We will be staying at the Doubletree downtown. Is it easier to park at the stadium/zoo for the game or take a bus from downtown.

    Thanks in advance--

Advice on Picking Up College World Series Tickets

Typically the city is really good about having shuttles to the stadium. I wouldn%26#39;t be suprised if your hotel provided transportation.

The zoo may be a bit crowded but it is huge there. FYI you may not park at the zoo and go over to the stadium. It is frowned upon.

There is a ticket broker in Omaha. TicketExpress.com. They typically have lots of tickets. I would not do general admission with a little one. It is crowded and less comfortable.

Advice on Picking Up College World Series Tickets

I have parked in the neighborhoods as a lot of people do, but count on a long walk. Many private homes and businesses rent parking spaces out - I have parked a few times at the church just a few blocks down on 13th St. they use it as a fund raiser. If you drive just get down to the ballpark early so you can find a spot and walk to the park.

I think its a pretty fun crowd around the park for the games and have never had any problems.

I cant help you with the ticket question though, be careful of scammers and scalpers. General admission does not guarantee you a seat - you get in a long line and when they start letting people in they count so many then stop the line and they are done.

What we do every year is get tickets off ticket master and never seem to have a problem as long as you are ready the minute that they come online to sell. Just my suggestion.

    Hi,

I own a home, one block south of the stadium and zoo. Typically I charge $10 per game to park in the lot, which is cheaper than the $20 per game down the street. You can leave anytime you want, so you don%26#39;t have to depend on the shuttle times. It is a short walk to the zoo/stadium. If you need me to reserve a spot for you, let me know. If you are interested, please give me a call Joe (402)-203-5874.

Thanks all. I was able to get tickets on Ticketmaster when they went on sale April 11. I am mulling over the idea of whether to park near the stadium before the game or leave the car at the hotel and take the shuttle. Both look like viable options.

    Here%26#39;s hoping for good weather!

Spot, we are regular tailgators at the CWS. We tailgate very close to the main gate of the zoo. While I can%26#39;t help you with parking, I can give you a free refreshment, a bite to eat, and a lawn chair to park your 15 month old if you need a break between the zoo and the game..

Let me know and I%26#39;ll let you know where to find us.

I am also planning to attend a game or two at the CWS this year. It will be my first time in attendance after watching extensively for 20 years.

However, I do not yet have tickets. What is the best way to get tickets since Ticketmaster has sold out? Can you usually pick up reserved seat tickets outside the park on the day of the game, or do I need to take my chances with online ticket brokers?

    Thanks!

Ticketmaster may be your best bet. While there are a handfull of tickets at the satdium each day, they sell them on the lottery system. You get in line each day at like 9:00 AM to get a number then they call a number and that is where the line starts.

There are always scalpers too. It is a law in Omaha that they can not sell over face value within a mile of the stadium so you can get tickets at a reasonalbe price. I have never seen anyone not get a ticket if they want one.

Also keep in mind that each game is a seperate ticket now. Most days are double headers early in the week, and you will need a ticket for each game.

I%26#39;ve been a season ticket holder for years, and attend when I can. CWS ticket holders now can sell their tickets through TicketExchange, which is supported by TicketMaster. I found this website: http://www.cwsomaha.com/ A big plus is that buyers can be assured that the tickets are legit.

This has spawned another question. I noticed on the CWS website that there are opening ceremonies on Friday, June 12. The reference is pretty vague-- it just mentions fireworks and baseball (and that it is free).

Can anyone provide more detail? Is any part of this worth attending?
