Need a Hotel near or In Chappell

My family will be traveling to Chappell NE late July early August from the Quad Cities to attend a wedding in Chappell Nebraska. I know nothing about th area at all nor do I have a clue where to stay. PLEASE HELP! After the wedding we would like to take our sons to Colorado to see the mountains. How much further would we need to travel and where would you recommend we go. When I try to find hotels in Chappell nothing come up except towns I have never heard of. We would like a room for 5. I have a 21, 19 and 11 year old plus my husband and myself. We would like a free breakfast as well if possible. Thanks to any out there with good advise.

Need a Hotel near or In Chappell

One of the closest towns I found with hotels is Sidney, NE and it is 30 miles straight west. Ogallala is 43miles back east on I-80. When we were in Sidney last year we never stayed there, but most of the hotels looked fairly new and built close to the Cabella%26#39;s store. The only one, from the internet research that I just did, that has free breakfast is the Days Inn. I was surprised because usually the Comfort Inns and Americinns offer free breakfasts. The Americinn does offer it for a surcharge. All of you would enjoy the Cabella%26#39;s store with its wide assortment of hunting, fishing, camping, home accessories, etc. For beautiful mts., go south into CO 214 miles to RMNP. Estes Park, CO is on the eastern side and Grand Lake, CO is on the western side of RMNP. RMNP offers beautiful views, hiking, and wildlife. The name of the rd. through the park is Trail Ridge Rd. If you plan on any hikes, make sure you go early in the morning so you are down below tree line by noon or 1 because afternoon lighting storms are common. You should pack jackets even in July and August you will need them on the upper elevations. These mts. are so beautiful and a trip here with your family will result in some wonderful memories.

If your family likes airplanes you could stop at the air musuem, between Omaha and Lincoln, on the west side of the Platte River. The museum used to be at the air base at Bellevue, Ne. You might be able to rent a cabin at Mahoney State Park which is right next to the musuem. Here you can ride horses, min. golf, swim, hike, and fish. The cabins rent fast so they might be full. This could be on your way to the wedding or your way home.

Enjoy your trip.

Thank you so much for athe great information. Your ideas sounds exactly what we are looking for and are much appreciated!

Food, Lodging, and Anything to Do?

My adult daughter and myself will be stopping in Lincoln for the night, en route to Durango Springs. Should be getting there late afternoon and leaving late morning the next day. We need a reasonable hotel and a good restaurant for dinner in an easy to get to and safe neighborhood. Also, is there something we should see while we are there? Days are long this time of year and we may never get to Lincoln again.

Food, Lodging, and Anything to Do?

A Holiday Express was built in 06 at 8801 Amber Hill Ct. This is on the east side of Lincoln on Highway 2. Around that area, you will findchain restaurants. A small chain that started in Lincoln is Runza. You should try them a least once. Runza are a long roll stuffed and baked. They come in different varieties. Another fantastic restaurant is Grandmother%26#39;s at 70th and A. Tandoor(Indian), Wind Chimes(oriental) Parthenon(Greek) are all located along Highway 2. Acapulco is a new Mexican restaurant located at about 13th and Highway 2.

North 27th St. has many hotels and chain restaurants.

57th and Highway 2 is a Hampton Inn.

There are 3 hotels in the Haymarket District, but they aren%26#39;t cheap and I don%26#39;t feel safe in this area at night. It is fine for shopping or walking in the day, just not at night.

A few suggestions of things to do would be to browse the boutiques in the restored Haymarket District. This area is as the name implies , an old haymarket. ,Sunken Gardens(newly renovated) with a newly renovated rose garden across the st.(free), NE Natural History Museum(donation), state capitol(free), National Roller Skating Museum (donation),telegraph and telephone museum,Sheldon Art Gallery, Germans from Russia museum. If you have time for a trip 45 minutes south would be to go the the National Homestead Monument at Beatrice, Ne . Here they have a new visitors center that resembles a plow that the homesteaders used to break the sod. Also, they have many exhibits and artifacts. A one-room school can be toured. The monument is located on the first homesteader%26#39;s homestead in NE.

I hope this helps and don%26#39;t be afraid to ask more questions.

Food, Lodging, and Anything to Do?

For restaurants in the Haymarket area, I would suggest Lazlo%26#39;s (American food), Arturo%26#39;s (Mexican food), or Vincenzo%26#39;s (Italian). A few blocks east of the Haymarket is Misty%26#39;s, which is a pretty nice steakhouse. This area of downtown is very safe.

Thank you so much for the ideas. We%26#39;ll definitely choose from one of those restaurants. How do we get to the Haymarket area from the expressway?

We don%26#39;t really have an expressway in Lincoln, but I assume you%26#39;ll be coming in on Interstate 80. So you%26#39;ll want to take I-80 to the I-180/Highway 34 South exit. It may say Downtown/9th Street also. After about two miles, you%26#39;ll see Memorial Stadium on your left (Nebraska plays football there) and a baseball stadium on your right. When you come off of this overpass, which is 9th Street, you%26#39;ll want to be in the right lane. The Haymarket is to your right. Just turn right at P Street (which will be the first stop light) and that will take you to the heart of the Haymarket. The Haymarket region basically is from 9th Street to 7th Street and from O Street to Q Street. It%26#39;s very easy to find. There are several parking lots in the area, mainly under the O Street overpass or down on 7th Street. Street parking is an option too.

Long Pine, Nebraska

What can anyone tell me about the Hidden Paradise area South of Long Pine? I hear it is a very beautiful spot unique to the state?

Long Pine, Nebraska

Yes, it is a beautiful place and great for hiking, and trout fishing in the Pine Creek. Also, you can go tubing in the creek. Cabins are available among the pine trees at Long Pine and motels are available Bassett and Ainsworth. This is a great place to relax.

Long Pine, Nebraska

Hidden Paradise is a gorgeous area! I have never officially stayed in Hidden Paradise, as we camp in the state park close by, however each year, we do go up into Hidden Paradise to visit. The area is spectacular, we have been going to Long Pine once a year for about 15 years, and the whole area is amazing. Depending on what you want to do, the fishing is great, tubing is fantastic(that is what we go for), or just a getaway to relax. Hidden Paradise, it self is very unique! You stroll through the area, that has houses almost as if they are on islands. It is very peaceful!

College World Series Room

Does anybody have any insider info on getting a block of rooms for June 22 and 23, 2007. I know it is the last weekend of the CWS. Our baseball team is in town for a tourney and I need to find a block of approximately 15 rooms.

College World Series Room

Looks like you%26#39;re going to be in town for the second weekend of the CWS, so you%26#39;ve got better odds of getting some rooms. Typically as the teams start losing, the teams and their fans start leaving town, so as the week goes on, more and more hotel rooms open up.

I%26#39;d suggest trying to find some guarenteed arrangements, then maybe during that week (wednesday or thursday) start calling around and see if you can%26#39;t get a better deal elsewhere.

The big CWS weekend is the opening weekend, by the time the championship game weekend arrives, people are little burned out. Also depends on who makes the championship game. If Texas would, their fans would travel up here for the game and take some hotel rooms out, but if it were Stanford or someone without a big fan following, you%26#39;ve got even better chances to score some rooms.

Good luck

  • Henry Doorly Zoo

My husband %26amp; I are planning a day trip to visit the zoo from KC. What are the prices like at the restaurants at the zoo? (trying to budget, since most will go to gas)

    Henry Doorly Zoo

For more information, call (402) 733-8401

    Food:

TreeTops Restaurant: Cafeteria-style restaurant overlooking the world%26#39;s largest indoor rainforest, the Lied Jungle, open daily.

Concession stands: Variety of menu items. Located throughout the zoo, open during warm weather. Limited menu items at each stand.

Picnic areas: Located throughout the zoo, available on a first come, first serve basis.

    www.omahazoo.com/visitors/index.asp…

    Henry Doorly Zoo

Depending on what you want to eat, 5-7 bucks per person should get you a decent lunch. I don%26#39;t think the price of burgers/hot dogs, etc. is that bad, but the soft drinks are pretty pricey. Salads and deli sandwiches at the Treetops Restaurant might be a little more expensive, but keep in mind that grill items cost no more there than at any of the other concession stands. Also the zoo does allow coolers and you can carry in anything except alcoholic beverages. There is a beautiful outdoor picnic area between the aviary and the Omaha train depot, and picnic tables are scattered throughout the zoo.

If at all possible, I strongly urge you to bring in a picnic. Prices are a bit high for the quality of food, in my opinion.

Tree tops generally does have the best selection and quality. Cafeteria style plus concession style as well.

If you don%26#39;t want to lug around a cooler, you can go out to your car, just get your hand stamped before.

You will love the zoo. It is one of my favorite places to go year round. (much better than the one in KC...we lived there for 11 years)

    Lisa

Thanks for the info. And Lisa, yes I agree, the KC zoo is not much to write home about. Looking forward to seeing a good quality zoo!

    Restaurants and antiques

    1. Where are the local spots to eat? That is, not the chain restaurants of ';everytown';?

2.. We would appreciate leads on where to shop for antiques, both in North Platte and in the nearby towns.

    Restaurants and antiques

    Howdy Woodville,

I am not sure what type of food you are looking for?

If you want Nebraska Beef. (and who wouldn%26#39;t) I like Whiskey Creek. Located right off I-80 and Hwy. 83 interchange past the Applebees and behind Fort Cody Trading Post.

Or downtown by the railroad overpass on Hwy. 83 is the Depot. They have a wide variety with good quality Sandhills beef.

If you are travelling East on I-80 towards North Platte, you could stop at Ole%26#39;s Steak House in Paxton, Ne. (30 miles west of NP)

Or you could stop at Butch%26#39;s Steak House in Hershey, Ne. (12 miles west of NP)

    As for antiques:

There is an anitique mall on the South side of the I-80 and Hwy. 83 interchange.

There is Grandmas Memories (806 N. Jeffers) on the North side of town on Hwy. 83 that is I believe 1 block north of the railroad overpass on the west side of the street.

Then there is The Hay Loft. (2006 E. 4th Street) When going North on Hwy. 83, 4th street will be the street on the north side of the courthous. There is a stoplight there.

There are a few more specific ones around, but best to ask the locals when you arrive to where they are and if they are open.

I believe there is one in a small ranching community of Arnold northeast of NP 55 miles.

    Happy Trails

    Johnny's Cafe?

I am planning a trip to Omaha and read a lot about Johnny%26#39;s Cafe. Is it any good? Any other suggestions for a group of city dwellers coming down for a weekend?

    Johnny's Cafe?

Reference my response to the Bohemian Cafe question on this list for some suggestions.

Safe travels and good eating !

    Johnny's Cafe?

Yes, you will enjoy Johnny%26#39;s Cafe. It is an excellent choice.

Lo Sole Mio is good too!

    best route through lincoln

    hi. quick question.

to go from lincoln to kansas city, would highway 2 be faster than taking highway 80 up to omaha and then down highway 29?

    thanks

    best route through lincoln

Yes Riawonly you should take HWY 2 out of town and to Ne.City.

There you will get on HWY 29. It is a very easy drive to KC.

Depending where you start in Lincoln it should take you 3 hours.

    CSBM

    best route through lincoln

thanks a lot. i was afraid there would be too many signal lights, stop signs, etc. but i%26#39;ll definately use highway 2 when i pass through in august.

Highway 2 is 4 lane from Lincoln to NE City and is excellent road.

After you leave Lincoln, you won%26#39;t have any stoplights until you hit the junction of Hwy2and 75 , which is a stop light. When you are in NE city you could visit Arbor Lodge. If you are going in Sept. or later, be sure to pick up some locally grown apples. Around Arbor Lodge, you will find hiking trails which are great for stretching the legs.

    thanks for the advice, tourist2.

just to ';third'; CSBM and tourist2...

Hwy 2 to I29 is quicker and easier than going I80. Lived in KC for 12 years, and went back and forth to Lincoln about 6 - 8 times a year. (Both hubby and I raised there, family still there). I could almost drive it with my eyes closed. Do be careful watching the speed limit on Hwy 2. Only times we ever got speeding tickets on those trips were on Hwy 2, even though we went more over speed limit on I29! And they sure don%26#39;t give out any warnings!! Even when I was driving by myself with a screaming 3 month old and screaming 2 year old in the back! lol

Things To Do In Omaha during College World Series?

What are the must do%26#39;s and must see%26#39;s in Omaha. We will be bringing 15 baseball players , age 14 for a baseball tournament.

Things To Do In Omaha during College World Series?

Well the Henry Doorly zoo is a popular choice - right across from Rosenblatt field. Parking can be tough when the CWS is on though.

How about the Strategic Air Command Museum in Ashland - about 30 mins from downtown - http://www.strategicairandspace.com/

A tour of %26#39; Boy%26#39;s Town %26#39; might be in order if you are trying to educate and inform - now called %26#39; Girls and Boys Town %26#39; .

    http://www.girlsandboystown.org/aboutus/tour/

For a lot of ideas, check out:

Things To Do In Omaha during College World Series?

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I will look at all of these. Now, Places to eat ? Do you know the amount of food 14 year old , active teeagers consume ? Nothing formal. Family atmosphere. Great prices and food.

    Thanks, again

Not sure where you will be staying, that might help. Are you coming for the CWS or a different tournament? Hope you have your rooms reserved !

You might look into this place for food and fun:

    http://www.amazingpizzamachine.com/

    Or Dave %26amp; Busters.

For cheaper eats without fun and games , any of the Valentino%26#39;s locations might be good they have an all you care to eat pizza buffet for one price ( also has a salad bar , pasta, etc ) that would be reasonable.

Maybe other folks here have suggestions our kids are grown and we hit spots more for grown ups !

I agree - do not leave Omaha without going to the zoo - one of the best in the country. Go early to avoid CWS traffic, pack a lunch and spend the day. Spaghetti Works is a good family restaurant, Old Market. Mi Mama%26#39;s Pizzeria has large tables and a gameroom - popular family place. Papillion (Omaha suburb) has a big, new waterpark if you want a day of swimming. Western Heritage Museum is wonderful, but it depends on the audience.

I%26#39;ll second what was said above...definately go to the zoo.

My kids are right in that age range, and Amazing Pizza Machine is one of their faves. Hubby and I like it because it is owned by Valentino%26#39;s so the quality of the food is a bit better. Do note, however, this is like a Chuck E Cheese...half the restaurant (which is HUGE) is devoted to arcade games, but there are lots that early teens would enjoy. It does get pricey, so check out the web site for prices.

The SAC Museum is great too. There are all the planes that are on permenant display, but also rotating displays as well that are very good. In addition to the water park at Papillion at the same exit as the SAC Museum is Mahoney State Park which also has a pool, wave pool and water slides. The cost for day passes into the state park are fairly inexpensive.

Although noting that you are from Texas Hill Country, our ';water parks'; are more like a glorified city park compared to your Schliterbaun (sp?).

    Lisa

One word.....';Paulie%26#39;s';. You have to go here at least once after the evening games. This is where the party is at.

In-Play: just northwest of the Qwest Center. It%26#39;s very Dave %26amp; Buster%26#39;s-ish (i.e. arcade games, food, etc.)

Fun Plex: Omaha%26#39;s very own water park. It%26#39;s no Ocean%26#39;s of Fun, but I think will suffice for 14-year-old boys. Located on South 72nd St. (i hope that%26#39;s right).

If any of your kids skateboard or rollerblade there%26#39;s an excellent free city park at 76th and Cass, Robert%26#39;s Park.

The Zoo is a must see, they%26#39;ve got a 3D IMAX movie playing now.

It%26#39;ll be hot. Linoma Beach is located between Omaha and Lincoln and has floating trampolines, iceburgs, etc. Great time for that age, open til 6. It%26#39;s also right by the SAC museum and the drive through wild-life safari.

Do not take 14 year olds to Pauli%26#39;s. That%26#39;s for the college drinking set.

Wish our son was still in Omaha. we would be there to see the Beavers

Favorite restaurants near the Embassy Suites??

I%26#39;m going to be in Lincoln on family business this July with my mother and world traveler aunt. We%26#39;ll be staying at the Embassy Suites and I%26#39;d love to hear of some great restaurants nearby. We especially like anything Asian/Indian/Interesting, but will be there for 3 days and would love to visit any Cornhusker classic places in the area as well. Our preference would be restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, but for something special we%26#39;d certainly be willing to drive.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Favorite restaurants near the Embassy Suites??

An excellent Indian restaurant, just west several blocks, is the Oven. If you need specific directions, just ask. Another great place to eat south of Embassy is The Green Gateau. It serves meals, but looks like an English tea room, great food. Billy%26#39;s is a small restaurant in a remodeled home, but you would probably want to drive there, wouldn%26#39;t want to walk in that area when it is dark, but fantastic food. Avoid Lazlo%26#39;s, bragged up by many people, but overpriced bar food. Another restaurant you would need to drive to is Wilderness Ridge Lodge. This is an upscale housing development with a lodge to resemble a mt. lodge. It is set on a golf course and open to the public. It is about 1/2mile east and 6 miles south of the Embassy. Feel free to ask more questions.

Favorite restaurants near the Embassy Suites??

I would concur on The Oven. Very good and very nice atmosphere. I would disagree with tourist2 on Lazlo%26#39;s though. In addition to good food, they make their own beer. I%26#39;ve never been disappointed with their food or beer. It is only about three blocks from Embassy. If you%26#39;re looking for a VERY expensive meal, then go to Wilderness Ridge. If driving is an option, then head to 70th %26amp; Pioneers to a place called Venue. Very upscale atmosphere with great food and a little less costly than Wilderness Ridge. Misty%26#39;s is right across the street from Embassy and they are known for their steaks. It is a Husker classic. To each their own.

We forgot to mention Steak House which is known for their steaks, you get to pick your own from a clear front refrigerator case. Also, they have other excellent meals. A small Lincoln based chain is Runza. Runzas are a ground meat, cabbage combination in a stuffed baked sandwich. They look like a stuffed Hoagie bun, only you can%26#39;t see the inside until you break them open or start to eat. They come in a variety of combinations and you can%26#39;t really taste the cabbage. We stand by our assessment of Lazlo%26#39;s, an EXPENSIVE BAR, many here think that way, not just us.

This is kind of like going to a dueling piano bar except it%26#39;s dueling recommendations. In addition to Runza, there is Valentino%26#39;s Pizza, which is also a Nebraska original. Tourist2, I%26#39;m curious as to why you think Lazlo%26#39;s is expensive bar food, yet you don%26#39;t mention that The Lodge at Wilderness Ridge can easily amount to over $100 for two people. Just so everyone knows, I have no vested interest in any of these places I recommend. I%26#39;m a fan of Lazlo%26#39;s and their sister restaurant Fireworks. I like The Oven. I like Valentino%26#39;s pizza. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

To add to this list...Within walking distance of Embassy Suites is also Spaghetti Works. This actually started in Omaha. Pretty good, but I%26#39;d pick Val%26#39;s (Valentino%26#39;s) if deciding between Italian cuisine.

Even though I am in Omaha now, I was raised in Lincoln until 21. Moved around a bit in the midwest (Iowa and KC) until age 35 and now back in NE. In all our visits back to Lincoln we ALWAYS had to stop at Runza (more fast foody/lunch type - but MUCH better than typical fast food places - oh and btw, I myself don%26#39;t care for the actual ';runza';, but their burgers are wonderful). And we ALWAYS stopped at Valentino%26#39;s. In fact, many times for Christmas dinner, we would bring up BBQ from KC, and then we%26#39;d also have Val%26#39;s pizza for us! When we lived in KC, we would drive an hour to Topeka, KS to the nearest Val%26#39;s just for thier pizza. My bro-in-law moved to Boston, and still asked for frozen Val%26#39;s pizza%26#39;s be sent to him for b-day presents.

One of my first phone calls when we moved back to Omaha was to the closest Valentino%26#39;s, asking them if we were in their delivery area, and if not, what I had to do to get into it!! (we were, they guy thought I was nuts!!)

    Lisa

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I appreciate the help. You%26#39;ve given me some great ideas.

    Liz

I think all of these are good restaurants... I always tell people to try out Runza and Valentino%26#39;s... I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll have any problem finding good restaurants in Lincoln though. There is a website, Lincolntogo.com that lists most of the restaurants along with their menus... I would recommend checking that out before you make any decisions...

Thanks for that link! Very helpful.

  • Looking for Advice on Relocating to Metro Omaha

I am looking for some advice. I currently live in Canada and I am considering a job offer with a company based in Shenandoah, Iowa. My family are not small town people, so we are exploring the possibility of buying a home in metro Omaha and commuting back and forth to work. To cut down as much as possible on the travel time, we would prefer to buy a home in the southeast part of metro Omaha. What is Council Bluffs like? Also, considering Bellevue because it appears to be closer to Shenandoah. Any neighborhoods you can recommend? We would be looking for a home in the 150 to 200 range. What am I looking at for commute time each day during rush hour? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Looking for Advice on Relocating to Metro Omaha

If you use mapquest it comes up with 52 miles and an hour drive time which is fairly close. There is alot of newer homes on the south end of Bellevue with several new stores and restaurants. With highway 370 and 75 there is easy access to Omaha. In Council Bluffs it seems much of the new residential construction is going northeast and more industrial to the south.

Looking for Advice on Relocating to Metro Omaha

Good luck with your search. Shenandoah is quite a drive to the Metro - depending on what you are used to. The west side of Bellevue has a lot of new construction in your price range and it is a growing area - Hwy 370 / 72nd st and in a few miles around that. Older Bellevue is kinda funky. You could then take the 370 toll bridge over the river and hook up to I-29 and then down. Glenwood Iowa might be a choice but its a small town. There should be a lot of homes in Council Bluffs in that range.

When I relocated here I contacted a real estate agent prior to coming out and told them what I was looking for so they could narrow down choices then I came out on a few trips and looked around and then decided on where to settle.

You might want to consider the income and property tax ( and personal property tax in Nebraska ) burdens of Iowa vs Nebraska prior to making a decision as well. I think you will find Nebraska more expensive to live in.

    Hello !

Here is a thought ... you don%26#39;t have to move to Southeast Omaha at all. Try IOWA. Omaha is not really a big city after all and if you move to Bellevue or Council Bluffs that is still small town. IOWA has better tax advantages, better schools, lower crime rate, higher median income and higher high school graduate and continuing education rate. I know this because I explored both states and all of the facts and ended up moving to NEBRASKA. But truly ... sometimes I%26#39;m sorry that I did. Considering the fact that you are going to work in Iowa, you should move to Iowa. It will show solidarity to the company you are being employed by ... and quite frankly the workers that you will be possibly managing and dealing with everyday. Plus with the way gas prices are today and the wear and tear on your vehicles I%26#39;d go for closer. Glenwood is a beautiful town and although small is very very pretty and friendly and expanding. For your price range you could get a phenomenal home in Iowa.

Good Luck ... take a risk I bet you won%26#39;t be sorry !!

For a good realtor call Bruce Johnson at 402 677 3003 and he handles NE and Iowa. And he%26#39;s my realtor and hes%26#39; not related :)

MomsOfOmaha.com Has Lots of Info On Things To Do in Omaha

I ran across a website called MomsOfOmaha.com that has a lot of information on things families can do in Omaha, Nebraska. I think it%26#39;s a new site. Lots of categories by interest and a new Forum area where moms give their opinions on the best things available in town. This beats looking at just ads for things to do.

MomsOfOmaha.com Has Lots of Info On Things To Do in Omaha

    Lincoln Hotel

I am looking for a nice hotel in Lincoln. I will be traveling with my family, staying for a few days. We also would like to stay near the University of Nebraska. Also if you have any suggestions for things to do with kids, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

    Lincoln Hotel

What is the amount you would want to pay for a room? There are three hotels close to UNL, but they are $$$. Lincoln is an easy town to find things so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about staying out from UNL where hotels will be more reasonable. The NE state history museum is a fun place for all ages. Also, the state capitol gives free tours and we have elephant hall on main campus. East campus has a quilt museum, a delicious dairy store for ice cream, and a tractor museum. Unless, your kids are young the zoo would be a waste of time for you. Pioneers park has some great trails for hiking and picnics. Also, a small buffalo herd and a few elk. These can be viewed from right next to the road. We also have a telephone museum, rollerskate museum (free), and a Germans from Russia museum. Lincoln Children%26#39;s Museum is about 4 years old and a wonderful place for young kids, lots of hand-on activities. A person could spend a 1/2 day there with all of the activities.

In Beatrice, about 45 minutes south, is the National Homestead Museum. This is the site where the first homesteader lived in NE. This summer they opened a new visitor%26#39;s center, shaped like a plow that was used to turn the sod, a sod buster. Thousands of items on display pertaining to homesteading. Most week-ends they have special events. A one-room school house is just down the road and can be toured. Also, there are trails to explore the prairie.

Please ask any more questions you have. I hope this helps.

    Lincoln Hotel

Thank you for your reply tourist2. I just want to make sure we stay in an area that is safe and somewhat near UNL. We would like an outdoor pool if possible. The attractions you listed sound like a great idea. Are there any sporting events in town that we might attend?

Any hotels on 27th ST. would be convenient to UNL. Most hotels have indoor pools, but I could check for outdoor. What price range? Also, when are you coming so I could check for sporting events. In the summer, we have the Saltdogs baseball team which is having a great session. Also, the U%26#39;s sports teams.

We will be in town July 8-11. Anything sports related would be great.

A minor league baseball team, Saltdogs, will have home games on July 9th-11th. They play the Explorers at 7:05. The stadium is great and not very old. It is just west of UNL%26#39;s Memorial Stadium.

Tourist2, Thank you for your replies. We look forward to an enjoyable time in Lincoln

Family friendly hotel near the Old Market

We%26#39;re looking for a family friendly hotel in the Old Market area. Hotel should have swimming pool and kitchenette (at least fridge/mircowave). A reasonably priced suite would be great. Any recommendations?

    Thank you

Don%26#39;t miss the Botanical Gardens, Zoo (one of the best in the country), and Joslyn art museum. Also, there are great restaurants downtown!

    what's to see in omaha?

Are you looking for outdoor activities ? You mentioned national parks - there are State Parks nearby. What type of activities are you thinking of maybe that will give us some other ideas.

    i.e.

    - Music

    - Arts

    - Museums

    - Travel

    - Wineries

    - Hiking

    - Dining

As you have seen from a map, Omaha and surrounding Nebraska are not an area with an obvious natural attraction like mountains for skiing or the ocean.

A canoe trip can be taken on the Niobrara River at Valentine. Beautiful sandhills views on the road from Mission, SD to Valentine, NE. If you like windmills, you can get some great pictures. You can fish trout in the Pine Creek at Long Pine, NE. Camping is available at the Long Pine State Recreation Area. Grand Island has the Stuhr Museum, which has buildings moved to the site to look like a farm and small town in the early 1900%26#39;s. A lot of week-ends they have special actiivities planned. A great place to visit and have a picnic.

Beatrice, south of I-80, about 45 minutes, has the Homestead National Monument. The monument is located on land of one of the first homesteaders, Daniel Freeman. This spring they opened a new visitor%26#39;s center, in the shape of a sod buster. Here they have a museum dedicated to things pertaining to the Homestead Act. You can take a hike on a trail in natural prairie. Also, a one-room school is available to tour.

Lincoln has NE History Museum which a quilt exhibit, a building the state(1867-1916) exhibit, a made in NE exhibiit, and other things. The cost for this is a 2.00 suggested donation. Also, there is a Germans from Russia Museum, telephone and telegraph museum, free national roller-skating museum, the capitol, a newly restored sunken gardens with many flowers and water features. You might also want to take in a NE football game if you come on a Sat.

Between Lincoln and Omaha, east of Ashland, is the air and space museum. Many planes are on display, inside a HUGE structure, and you can watch them restoring other planes. Also, they have different traveling exhibits. Also, at this exit on I-80, is Mahoney State Park which has camping and cabins available. Here you can fish, ride horses, large indoor playground for small children, paddleboats, waterpark, mini-golf, and in winter ice skate. Meals can be eaten at a lodge, have buffet or order off the menu.

    Omaha has a wonderful zoo.

    Have a wonderful vacation.

Thank you so much for all the great Nebraska tips! I knew there were things in Nebraska that we should see. I%26#39;m excited about making this trip. Will definitely keep your tips in mind.

    Thanks again.

I forgot to mention Chimney Rock on the Oregon Trail and nearby Courhouse Rock and Jail house Rock. All 3 of these to seem to just rise out of the prairie. Also, the Scottsbluff National Monument is interesting. NE National Forest includes an unusual combination of forest and grasslands. Calamus reservoir and dam near Burwell is a popular place to fish. Arbor Lodge at NE City is a fun location. Take a hike and a trip to the top of the treehouse. At the end of Sept., you could watch them pick, sort, and bag apples at NE City.

1 day trip to Lincoln, 1st time visit

    Hi Everyone,

We are planning a road trip and one of our stops will be Lincoln. We will only be in town for 1 day at most and this will be in the month of May. Can anyone recommend, for a first time visitor on a limited amount of time, what would be the ';must dos';?

We really don%26#39;t care what we do, we just want to experience the best time we can while we%26#39;re in Lincoln on our short amount of time and absolutely any input would be appreciated.

We will have a car, if that means anything.

    Thank you all so much!

1 day trip to Lincoln, 1st time visit

If you have only one day I would spend my time in the Haymarket area. This is near downtown and the University. There are many restaurants and galleries in this area. Some recommendations would be: The Oven (Indian food), Lazlo%26#39;s, and The Mill for coffee. The Saturday Farmers Market is great!! You might also wander over to the Sheldon Art Museum which is on the south side of UNL.

    Omaha-Lincoln transportation

I%26#39;ll be flying into Omaha and will need transportation to Lincoln. I don%26#39;t want to rent a car, since I will have access to one once I get to Lincoln. Are there any shuttle services that run between the two cities? Thanks.

OmaLink runs from Eppley in Omaha to lots of places in Lincoln and even further west. I%26#39;m originally from Lincoln, I%26#39;ve almost used Omalink on a few occasions, and I%26#39;ve found their schedule and prices to be pretty standard as far as shuttle services go. But not actually having used it, I can%26#39;t speak to service, etc.. here%26#39;s their website. There may be other shuttles, but I haven%26#39;t encountered them.

    Omaha-Lincoln transportation

    Thanks for the information.

you could also use Eppley Express. They run between the Omaha Airport and Lincoln Airport. Check out their times and schedules at www.eppleyexpress.com

i am not sure the following quote adds to my level of trust in Omalink.....No way is it a 3 hour drive. You could drive from Naperville to Omaha in 6 hrs! It is maybe an hour drive from Lincoln to Eppley in Omaha. In fact I always drive from Chicago to Lincoln and I live in the city. From Naperville it is an hour less. If there is any kind of delay at the airport you are better off to drive.

    ';To drive from Lincoln to the Omaha Eppley Airfield takes roughly 3 hours, plus waiting time. Therefore, you have to ask your friend to take 6 hours off from his or her job or free time to drive you up and back...Nobody likes to do that. Assuming your friend has a decent job, in order for him to take you to Omaha and drop you off, and then pick you up a week later, the cost of lost work could be easily over $200! Almost a full work day spent on the road driving, not to mention $20 in fuel and wear and tear on your friend%26#39;s vehicle';

Good Place To Celbrate 1yr Wedding Anniversary?

My wife and I attend grad school at UNL in Lincoln. We%26#39;re approaching our 1 yr anniversary this sunday, and I was looking for something/someplace special in omaha to celbrate. Lincoln is rather limited with romantic restaurants and activities, any suggestions in omaha (good restauraunts, parks to take a walk, other activities that may be happening on a sunday)?

Good Place To Celbrate 1yr Wedding Anniversary?

Congrats on the anniversary. Couple places I%26#39;d recommend. V Mertz in the old market passageway. Good service and atmosphere, plus you%26#39;re down in the old market if you want to walk around at all.

My wife and I also had a good time at Mahogany%26#39;s Prime ( a high end steakhouse - expect to pay $100 - $150)

Not seeing much as far as entertainment on Sunday at like the Orpheum or Holland.

Doesn%26#39;t look like the dundee has an old romantic movie playing either.

Not sure if it%26#39;s much help, but good luck

Good Place To Celbrate 1yr Wedding Anniversary?

We like Billy%26#39;s in Lincoln for a special occasion.

Chek out the new SULLIVANS that just opened in the Old Market.

V Mertz is a good choice ( although I think I read that they just turned over almost the entire cooking staff so not sure about that ) but if you go to the Old Market on a Sunday go early as everything pretty much closes up at 5PM. A Saturday evening would probably be nicer. You could walk over to the Heartland of America Park and catch a boat ride around the fountain, have a horse drawn carriage ride around the Old Market and maybe catch an artsy play at the Blue Barn theater or some live music.

    What's new in Nebraska/Omaha?

    Hi,

I lived in Omaha from 90-94 -with fond memories, I wonder what has changed? Has the city grown very much? Has organic/small scale agriculture caught on, or is it more or less all still about corn.

    Thanks

    What's new in Nebraska/Omaha?

Skyline has changed slightly. Lots of growth, especially in suburbs. Organic has caught on in the sense that we have Wild Oats and Whole Foods. Not sure if it%26#39;s caught on a whole lot with the local farmers. I do know that at the local farmer%26#39;s markets, theres a pretty good selection of organic.

    Colonial Hotel on Farnam?

Given that area its in, I would think that its perhaps a funky older property. They have no ads in the local yellow pages, no web site.

Its not a %26#39;bad%26#39; area of town per se- its near Mutual of Omaha and other businesses and not far from the U of N med center.

There are plenty of nice, newer hotels a few miles east of there in downtown Omaha.

    Colonial Hotel on Farnam?

    Maybe call them ?

I would not recommend staying in this area. Either find a hotel downtown (nothing west of 16th) or stay west of 72nd Street. The Mutual/UNMC areas are not the best places to be at night.

I drive by the Colonial on a daily basis. From what I see, it has been empty or mainly unused for years. However, I have seen a lot of construction going on in the past weeks. Im guessing they will turn it into condos or apartments rather than reopen it as a hotel.

    Stonekeeper road trip

    Hi all

I am planning a road trip from Chicago to Las Vegas via Memphis then back to Chicago.

And will pass through your State.

From my research so far i believe it to be around 5000 miles the whole trip.

Am i optimistic to expect to do it in a fortnight?

Has anyone any views on the best motel chain to stop at each night or do they vary from state to state?

Any advice on places NOT to stay in would be appreciated.

    Stonekeeper road trip

Hi! If you are going to stop in Lincoln, NE we would recommend you stay either off the 27th Street exit if you just want a place to sleep over night. There are some hotels/motels that are fairly new and reasonably priced.

If you plan to spend time in Lincoln, or just want something with more ammenities, we would recommend the downtown hotels. Embassy Suites or Cornhusker Marriott are very nice and the Atwood House B%26amp;B is wonderful if you are looking for more of a B%26amp;B atmosphere. Downtown has things to do within walking distance and the Haymarket is fun with lots of shops and restaurants.

    Best of luck!

    Stonekeeper road trip

    Hi again

Thanks for all the input from all the states that have so far. Still some notable exceptions (maybe them are the ones to drive through as quickly as possible:~) )

The respondees so far seem to be getting an idea of what we intend. It is obvious that the initial trip may be significantly different than the trip we complete.

    At the moment it still seems to be ;

land Chicago (looking for direct flights from Manchester possibly Glasgow)

pick up car and go to a motel reasonably quickly heading for Memphis. (Tet%26#39;s advice on not too much travel after flight noted).

We will then head for Memphis

We have now decided to use the sat nav to head for suggestions made on here E.g Rockies, grand canyon etc. Again Tets recommended trip is also printed out and ready for implementation.

Depending on how far west we have got by day 8 we will head north slightly to change interstate to start heading back to Chicago.

I believe i have to take into consideration the time zones, going west to east in USA will i not lose a couple of hours on the return trip.

    If fuel is around $2.50 - $3.00 @ 30 mpg i am looking at $400.

Anyone any suggestions to the best car to hire?

Luckily i was at Gurnee mills but because of my reliance on the machine i did not know where Gurnee Mills was in relation to the hotel,it was now dark and after a visit to the car park to see if i could get any form of bearings for a guess where i live drive, we nipped back in and bought a Tom Tom.Home in Half an hour.

    Crowne Plaza Omaha

Could someone give me some feedback on the Crowne Plaza at 655 N. 108th Ave? Our family is considering staying there on Friday night after a trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo. I can get a standard room for $54.50 as I have a 2007 Entertainment book and they are listed as one of the hotels in the Omaha area that offer a half price rate. I would think that It would be all right ofr just one night. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. If you have any other suggestions, they would also be appreciated. Thanks!

    Crowne Plaza Omaha

amo0426, never been beyond the lounge, but it appears to be a nice hotel. At $54 you can%26#39;t go too wrong.

The location to the zoo is a little bit of ways away, but we are known for our 20 minute commute. My guess non-rush hour is 15 minutes from the hotel to the zoo.

    Crowne Plaza Omaha

I just stayed there last week for a business trip. I payed $154 per night, so if you can get it for $54.50 its a great price. The hotel is just ok (not worth $154). The lobby is nice, the rooms decorated ok with nice bedding. However, the bathroom left a lot to be desired with mildew problems in the tile grout and not the level of finish i would expect for the $154 price tag. Also, the carpet in my room could have been replaced. I didn%26#39;t have a chance to use the pool area or the gym so I can%26#39;t comment there. Generally an ok hotel and for $54.50 you can%26#39;t go wrong.

    Qwest center--hotels near--location of...

I am coming in for a concert at the Qwest Center(?) and am wondering if it is right downtown. We want to be in a hotel right in the center or very near to nightlife. Is The Qwest in the same area? Is there a specific area in downtown that is known more for nightlife or are the bars/clubs spread out? Any hotel recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Qwest center--hotels near--location of...

patty - the Hilton Garden Inn is directly across from the Quest Center and is lovely. You will be in a great area known as the Old Market (web search it) lots of bars, restaurants, etc. Also the Embassy Suites is very near too.

    Qwest center--hotels near--location of...

I%26#39;m a little confused. Looking at maps it seems like the qwest center is a bit away from that historic area, but they are right in the same area ????

The Old Market is about 6 or 7 blocks from the Qwest Center. It%26#39;s a nice walk as long as it isn%26#39;t too cold.

patty - if you stayed at the Embassy Suites, you%26#39;d be right in the Old Market, close to great restaurants, bars, etc and a short walk to the Quest Center for the concert.

How about the Courtyard by Marriott?

The Courtyard is between the Qwest and the Old Market. An easy walk to either.

If you%26#39;re looking for a nice combo of price/quality, bid for 2.5 stars on Priceline for Downtown Omaha ... either the Hilton Garden Inn or Courtyard by Mariott will come up (actually I%26#39;ve NEVER had the Courtyard not come up) for a $40 most every time. Bid a little in advance so you can bid a couple times after a 72 hour waiting period ... with all the fees and taxes it%26#39;s $53 for a night%26#39;s stay. Word of warning though ... this will only get you a king bed and a full pull-out couch. If you want doubles the people at the desk will charge you $10 on their own for the 2 beds.

I always bid this area and get this hotel when I need a place near the Old Market or Qwest. It%26#39;s a short 2 block walk to Qwest and about 3-4 blocks to the Old Market area and a nice walk as long as it isn%26#39;t too cold. The Embassy Suites would be the closest to the Old Market and the Hilton attached to the Qwest would be the closest to Qwest. Hope this helps!

The Hilton is attached to the Qwest center via skywalk and is an excellent hotel - much nicer than the Hilton Garden Inn but also more expensive. The Garden Inn is fine for the price. I don%26#39;t recommend the Courtyard - kind of disappointing to stay in. The old Market is a short walk from both Hilton%26#39;s. The embassy suites is next to the old market and should be fine to stay at.

Heading to Omaha, and have spent time in Old Town area, but never ventured north to Qwest Center ... which I will need to do this time. Can%26#39;t remember what I saw for sidewalks/paths across or under the Interstate Highway between Old Town and Qwest. I remember being in San Antonio, just across the IH from somewhere I wanted to walk, and had to dash across the highway and dodge cars. Too old for that now.

QUESTION: Are there safe sidewalks or paths to walk from Old Town to Qwest Center?

You can walk straight up 10th street to the Quest Center on a sidewalk from the Old Market Area / ConAgra campus with no problems.

There is also one east side of the Quest center that is nearer the river that goes back down to the park / ConAgra campus.

A cab would be quick and cheap as well.

Nebraska Beef has great steaks on %26#39;L %26#39; Street as does Charlies on the Lake on 144th street south of Center. Charleston%26#39;s on West Dodge road does a good job with a filet.

I didnt like the new Ted%26#39;s Montana Grill much.

In my opinion all of the old time Omaha steakhouses are way overrated ( Anthony%26#39;s, Cascio%26#39;s , MR C%26#39;s , )

    Restaurants - Omaha

Our favorite steakhouse in Omaha is Warren Buffet%26#39;s favorite - Gorats of course!

Thanks for the info, will try Johnnys Italian, checked it out on the internet, liked the menu.

try Brother Sebastians.... my all time favorite!

Brother Sebastian%26#39;s is one of my favorite%26#39;s too. I also like Anthony%26#39;s on 72nd St.

Sorry folks , I know good meet and good restaraunts and Brother S. and the other old school places ( Anthony%26#39;s, Cascios , Mr. C%26#39;s etc. ) in Omaha are substandard to anyone that knows good food. The people that grew up in Omaha just dont know any better.

The farther west you go and the newer the restaurant in Omaha the better chance you have of getting a decent meal. There are a few places in the Old market and the newer places near downtown that are good .

These old steakhouses are living off their reputation , they are worn out, have poor decor, and are full of folks with gray hair that dont know any better.

Ignore Grayhorses blatant arrogance. I too have eaten at many great steakhouses (including Flemmings, Ruth%26#39;s Chris, The Palms, Mahogany, and many other chop houses). Are those better than Brother Sebastians? Sure. However, you also pay $75 a person to eat at one of them. For a $20 steak, you will NOT get a better steak in Omaha than Brother Sebastians.

However, I do tend to agree with some of the old steakhouses east of 42nd street, which is sad. I used to love Cascio%26#39;s.

Hey grayhorse, How about the Drover???? Is it another old/bad steak house or OK??? It sounds like you really know your ';meet';.

No comment on the Drover, have not been there. Heard it was good but cant verify that.

I am sorry its not arrogance, maybe its because I know what good meat is and tastes like. I know the difference between a $50 steakhouse and the $20 steakhouses as well as the difference between select, choice and prime and how dry aged steaks should taste as well as be served.

I find that on an average day places in this area that are known for their steaks serve meat that is generally not a match for a Choice grade steak that I can pick up in a supermarket and grill myself for $10. I can make a better %26#39;prime rib %26#39; with Choice grade meat from Sam%26#39;s Club than 95% of the places in town serve. Problem is that the customer that like these places dont know any better. Thats OK with me , if you are easlily pleased .

If you want steak that tastes like beef and that you dont need a chainsaw to cut or prime rib that does not taste like it was boiled ( losing all the real meat flavor hoping that the au jus will replace it ) you have to look around and ask people that know their meat. Restaurants try to get by on the cheap and do not use quaility beef , dont properly age their beef , hold prime rib in a steam table too long and many of the cooks really do not know how to cook a steak. It seems so easy but it is not.

    Happy Eatin !!!

Sorry for the confusion , visiting my Brother in Chi town and using his computer.

Time to get some good Chicago Dogs and Itailian beef. Last night

was Deep Dish Pizza - Holy Cow do I miss the food here!

Ya can get a decent Hot Dog in Omaha with Atomic Dog but they did move downtown out of Oakview since I was there last.

    Dinner Train

Looking for a dinner train in western Nebraska.

    Know of any??

    Thanks!

    Dinner Train

There is one that travels in the Chadron, NE area and I have heard that it%26#39;s really fun. the only problem is that I%26#39;ve also heard that it might be shutting down its operations.

I would suggest contacting the Chamber of Commerce in Chadron.

  • Bohemian Cafe- Runza??

We are from SC and planning a trip to Omaha. While researching the city and what to do and places to eat, I have seen the Bohemian Cafe mentioned often. People always refer to their Runza%26#39;s and I was just wondering what that was. I looked at their menu online and did not see it mentioned. Any other suggestions for things we should try there would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

    Bohemian Cafe- Runza??

Runza is a Nebraska based hamburger chain. In addition to ( average ) burgers , they feature a specialty sandwich that is a bread roll with a filling of ground beef / cabbage/ onion and seasonings called a Runza.

They also have other stuffed sandwiches on occasion like swiss mushroom etc.

Eating a Runza reminds me of the White Castle hamburgers of my youth - you will taste it for hours. Urp!

I have not eaten at the Bohemian Cafe yet, I know a lot of the locals here like it - but I do not necessarily trust the tastes and opinions of Nebraska natives all the time - given their poor track record on patronizing average to mediocre steakhouses and raving about them.

Thankfully there are a lot of good restaurants that have opened up in the past 10 years.

If you are in for the CWS the Bohemian cafe is a short ride up 13th street from the ball park, on th east side of the street - cant miss it.

    Bohemian Cafe- Runza??

What kind of food are you interested in? What price range?

The Bohemian is one of the few older restaurants that is still pretty good another is Piccolo Pete%26#39;s sadly many of the older steakhouses in town have closed or are in the process and have been replaced by chains.

Thanks for all of your help. I guess what we are looking for is probably a great steak, and something that is unique to your area. This is our first time in Nebraska. As far as price range we are not too picky, though we will be traveling with 3 children 11, 9, and 8. I would just like to know what we should not miss.

    Thanks

I%26#39;m a big fan of runzas, so I%26#39;d recommend somebody at least try one.

I went to the Bohemian Cafe a year or so ago and it okay. My wife and I picked at half of rotisserie chicken and it wasn%26#39;t too bad. They sure do pile on the dumplings though. Lots of dumplings and potatoes. The decor is straight out of the 60%26#39;s with a lot of Czek related stuff on the wall and what not.

Another of couple of local pizza related ';Nebraska'; places that you might like to try would be Zios pizza in Omaha. They%26#39;ve got a couple of locations and you can order by the slice and choose from a multitude of toppings. Also we%26#39;ve got a regional chain of pizza places ';Valentinos'; they%26#39;ve got lots of Omaha locations and I prefer it over Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, the other major pizza chains.

If you want a great steak in this town you would be advised to skip the %26#39;locals %26#39; places. You will hear about a lot of steakhouses that are way past their glory days and only living on reputation. When I moved here I was amazed at what poor quality meat and services was provided at these places and the locals just thought they were great - I guess they just don%26#39;t know any better. Places in this category are Cascios, Gorat%26#39;s , Mister C%26#39;s, Farmer Brown%26#39;s and quite a few others.

For good steaks , the Old Market has Omaha Prime, there is the Mahogany Prime steakhouse on west Dodge at about 136th , Coltons on west Center , Firebird%26#39;s Rocky mountain grill at the Village Pointe shopping center on 168th and Dodge, Texas Roadhouse, Johnny%26#39;s Itailian steakhouse in Village Pointe is good also. The Upstream Brewing company does a good job with some steaks and other good selections. Charlies on the Lake on 144th Street has some excellent Steaks and other good dishes. Skip Ted%26#39;s Montana Grill unless you want a buffalo steak.

A strange local place for fish is Joe Tess place on south 24th place - they serve Carp of all things - kind of shows you the culinary heritage and tastes of this town in the past.

Good pasta at Vivace ( old market ) , Vincenzo%26#39;s ( they also have a great Gorgonzola Steak ) , Pasta Amore ( Rockbrook )

You will not find a pizza over the grade of %26#39; decent %26#39; in this town ( maybe its because I am from Chicago and know what pizza is supposed to be like) . Old Chicago and Zio%26#39;s are probably the best.

Poor ignorant slobs probably just don%26#39;t know any better how fortunate for them you are there.

Its always good for someone who knows, to direct people on the proper path to gustatorial enlightment and cut through all the baloney and %26#39; select%26#39; grade meat.

    Thanks for caring !

Thanks for all of your advice. We are headed to Omaha tomorrow (Tues.) and will look for some of these places that you have all recommended. We are all in the mood for a really good steak. Can%26#39;t wait to see your city. Thanks Again.

We ended up eating lunch at the Upstream Brewing Company. It was good. We both had the Omaha Steak special that was good. Even better than the steaks was the breakfast bread(Applesauce Spice) that we bought as we were leaving. Thanks again to everyone for their great advice.

    italian restaurant

I am looking for a Italian restaurant that my husband and I ate at when we were in Omaha about 11 yrs ago. I am back in the area and would love to visit it again. I don%26#39;t remember the name but I do remember that it is close to downtown and is on a corner. They had a very large collection of wines in the wine cellar. I hope someone knows what place I am looking for.

    Thanks

    italian restaurant

I cannot think of any Italian restaurants with a lower wine cellar downtown. The restaurant that comes to mind first is Vivace, but it is not on a corner and I don%26#39;t believe it%26#39;s 11 years old yet. Outside of downtown not super close, is a restaurant called Lo Sole Mio that has a downstairs area not sure if there is a wine cellar.

Recently, a well-established family restaurant called Caniglia%26#39;s closed in the downtown area which may have been the one you are remembering. There is also Malara%26#39;s, which is a casual family Itialian restaurant not very elegant. I don%26#39;t believe either of these had a wine cellar, though.

    italian restaurant

There is a fabulous Italian restaurant on the corner downtown Omaha called Nicola%26#39;s but I also don%26#39;t believe it is 11 years old however has great food, wine selection and ambiance. This one will become your new favorite Italian in Omaha.

There was an Italian restaurant where Nicola%26#39;s is now. The owners just switched but the menu is still very similar. If you have anymore questions about Nicola%26#39;s, I worked there so I could help.

There is a wonderful italian resturant called Lo Solo Mio in Omaha. You should try it sometime!!

There used to be an Italian Restaurant on the corner of 39th and Leavenworth. I believe that%26#39;s the one you are speaking of. It would have been around 11 years ago, but ti%26#39;s out of business now.

We had a very poor experience on our last trip to Lo Solo Mio, we will never go back. I know the long time locals make a big deal out of it - probably because it was the only decent Italian in town for quite a while. But given its poor location and the availability of better food elsewhere in town why bother?

The old time places like some of the Canigilia family had are pretty poor if you have any idea about what good Italian food can be.

Vivace in the Old Market is a good choice as is Pasta Amore in Rockbrook and even the West Suburban chain joints like Biaggi%26#39;s are good - Vincenzo%26#39;s is a personal favorite on 144th near Blondo.

Nicola%26#39;s in the Market is a great authentic Italian restaurant. Another of my favorites is Carrabba%26#39;s on 144th and Maple. It is also an authentic Italian restaurant.

Spagetti Works is downtown (Old Market area) and is on a corner. Not sure how extensive their wine selection is, though.

Any details about the place you can remember? Large, small? Bright, dark?

I totally agree with Grayhorse. Lo Sole Mio is the best example of 1950%26#39;s Italian/American cusine I%26#39;ve ever seen. How they have any following at all is a mystery to me.

I paricularly love the servers. Some college kid who%26#39;s never been east of the Mississippi telling me how ';they do it in Italy'; is a hoot.

Omaha isn%26#39;t blessed with high quality Italian, but the best I%26#39;ve found is Spezia on 72nd between Center and I-80 for a night out and for simple ';side of the road'; fare try LaFata%26#39;s on 72nd between Blondo and Maple. It is a true family restaurant. Mom and Dad, who are from Sicily do the cooking and the the children along with Italian exchange students do most of the serving.

Lo Sole Mio is bad. We had a terrible experience there last year. Five ourt of our party became violently ill in the night. A call to the restauraunt the following Monday confirmed that one of the staff had returned to work that eve with the stomach flu. When I asked to have a manager call me back they denied this and refused to credit or charge card. Our weekend was cut short due to this debacle.

Omaha / Council Bluffs kid-friendly restaurants

Our family of 4 will be visiting the Omaha / Council Bluffs area this weekend and hoping to get some good, kid-friendly restaurants. Our kids are 4 and 3. Thanks for your recommendations in advance.

Omaha / Council Bluffs kid-friendly restaurants

They would probably like Mr. C%26#39;s Steakhouse, with all of the bright colored Christmas lights and murals, but it%26#39;s not in a very good neighborhood. Okay for a daytime visit, though.

Valentino%26#39;s has a pizza buffet - and what kid doesn%26#39;t like pizza?

The Old Market has some restaurants that would be fine - Spaghetti Works, Upstream Brewery.

It%26#39;s a chain, but my daughter like Famouse Dave%26#39;s.

Omaha / Council Bluffs kid-friendly restaurants

We have a 1 and 4 year old and love to go to Millard Roadhouse. Good food and definately a place your kids can make a little noise at.

There are plenty of the usual chains- Applebees, Perkins, Olive Garden, etc. and some excellent locally owned eateries, and other than the very high-end establishments, most will be kid-friendly...do you have an area of town in mind? That would be helpful in making a suggestion.

Relocating to Omaha Need help with Apts Search

Anyone out there living in Downtown Omaha and can tell me where to find downtown apts?

    Katherine

Relocating to Omaha Need help with Apts Search

I understand! I%26#39;ve lived in the area many years but recently moved from a house to an apartment and am now planning to relocate in Albany NY. Best of luck to you!

I%26#39;d check the local newspaper, the Omaha World Herald, for downtown listings. Also, there are several realtors specializing in the downtown area- one that I know of is Dundee Real Estate. Also try the online searches, Google omaha apartments and you will get several listing agencies.

Be picky about your location downtown. There are some VERY nice, safe areas and apartments, but also some less desireable, and the good and bad may only be a couple blocks apart!

Good luck! And welcome to Omaha- there is a lot going on here- check out The Reader or the City Weekly for ';what%26#39;s happening'; (weekly newsmagazines). Go to the Old Market area, and check out the music scene around town.

advise on must sees and charlies on the river

    Hi all,

We are going to Omaha this Friday and leaving Monday. Only been to the zoo once and will definatrey go back. Also will be going to see Kris Kristopherson in concert at the Holland. What is Charlies On The River like for dining and what other must sees are there?

    Thanks,

    Punz

advise on must sees and charlies on the river

We have enjoyed visiting Boy%26#39;s Town which is on Dodge and the 144th area. Omaha%26#39;s chamber of commerce web site also lists some other ideas so you could plan according to your interests. When you pull up their site type in tourism in the search engine.

I have never been to Charlie%26#39;s On the River so can%26#39;t be of any help on that subject.

advise on must sees and charlies on the river

I think you are talking about Charlie%26#39;s on the Lake. I%26#39;ve been there once for lunch during my last visit (actually heading back this week to visit a friend), and it was excellent. I really enjoyed it. The menu has a little bit of everything, from steak to seafood to pasta. So it tends to make everybody happy. A lot of locals eat there.

If you want to sample some of the best Omaha steak, head to Gorat%26#39;s. They serve up some great beef: It%26#39;s kind of an Omaha tradition. Try: www.goratssteakhouse.com.

Probably one of the best places to head is the Old Market downtown. It%26#39;s a nice area to walk around and has a variety of clubs, restaurants, shops, etc. I enjoyed the Upstream Brewing Company a lot, nice atmosphere and casual. For something upscale, the French Cafe is excellent. There%26#39;s usually ample parking around there. Here%26#39;s a link to help: www.oldmarket.com.

Also downtown is the Durham Western Heritage Museum, housed in the former Union Pacific train station. It has a lot of history about Omaha and I loved how they restored the building. Try: www.dwhm.org/

Hope that helps! Have a great time.

Charlies on the River was the same restaurant as Charlies on the Lake. It was located on Maple, but recently closed.

The Holland Center is right downtown, within a few blocks of the Old Market. I suggest heading over to the Market after the show- there are always a lot of people about and it is fun to visit the shops and bars and just ';hang';. There are plenty of good places to eat as well. They also have carriage rides. Take a jacket, tho. The nights are getting chilly!!

If you are downtown before the show, make time to take a stroll along the riverfront- it is very safe, well-lit, and just a pleasant place to walk around- Rick%26#39;s Boatyard Cafe is right next to the river- it is a poular large, upscale establishment.

    Have fun!

    Qwest Center neigborhood

Living in rural western NE. we hear lots about drive by shootings in Omaha. We%26#39;re coming in for the Bob Dylan concert and wondered about a safe and convenient place to stay for the night of the concert plus an additional night. I usually stay further out in western sections of town but wouldn%26#39;t mind being closer to downtown.

Anyone have any thought on this??

    Thanks!

    Qwest Center neigborhood

There%26#39;s a Hilton right across from the Qwest with a skywalk or a few blocks away is a Hilton Garden Inn and a Embassy Suites. The latter two are close to the Old Market area.

    Qwest Center neigborhood

The downtown and old market area is not usually a place to worry about. Most all of the gunplay is in the usual neighborhood on the north side - a few miles north of downtown. I would have no problem recommending staying downtown.

I second gray horse. You are safe downtown in the Qwest Center neighborhood. It is geared towards out of town guests and is pretty heavily patroled by the OPD. The gun action is nearly 30-40 blocks north and west of the downtown area. Have a good time.

Not to worry! Very safe area! Try the Hilton next door to the QWest Center, or, if you want to be more in the Old Market district, the Hilton Garden Inn is up the street as is Embassy Suites and also the Marriott. All are very nice.

Have a great time in Omaha!

I don%26#39;t mean to flame the original poster, but living in Omaha we hear stories about escaped convicts robbing casinos and locking down communities in western Nebraska. Should I be worried next time I%26#39;m in western Nebraska?

Please don%26#39;t stereotype Omaha as this chaotic, lawless town where people run around and shoot everybody. Omaha has crime, Chadron has crime, Scottsbluff has crime, Grand Island has crime. We all have crime.

So, since it%26#39;s safe to be down there, what%26#39;s the best place to go eat and grab a cold one after the concert?

I%26#39;d recommend the Upstream. It%26#39;s Omaha%26#39;s local brewpub. They brew their own beer and have a pretty good menu with some pretty good atmosphere as well. If you google upstream and Omaha you can check out there website.

  • Fun place for drinks on fri in the Old Mill area!

We are in town for a wedding and are staying at the Crowne in the Old Mill area. We have some free time friday night and are looking for a fun place to get drinks. We are 25 and love live music. Any advice? Thanks!

Fun place for drinks on fri in the Old Mill area!

    Hey guys,

I found this forum on accident a few minutes ago, you%26#39;re in luck. I just happen to live in that exact part of town and know it really well. If you are looking for a relaxing neighborhood bar, which is what I prefer at 37, and happens to be where I will be on Fri, Sat, etc. you could WALK down the hill from the Crowne, you%26#39;ll know which hill I am referring to when you get there, to the Old Mill Lounge. We are there a little too often 5-6 nights a week, but enjoy the company of many of my best friends.

Sounds like you like live music though. A short drive or cab ride away, approx. 1.5 miles, is a nice bar under new ownership called ';The Revue'; Usually has live music on weekends, when I used to go I remember hearing alot of blues. May want to call first, but pretty sure they still have bands on weekends.

Another idea would be to go to the Miracle Hills area, only about .5 miles from the Crowne. Could possibly walk if in the mood, in that area there are several entertaining venues, IE. The Shag and Fadora%26#39;s are right next door to each other, both, kindof hard to explain I guess, mostly younger crowd, new and nice, they get very busy. Paddy Murphy%26#39;s is a fun bar, restaurant attached to a dance club called Club Patrick%26#39;s, or right across the street from those four is a nice sport%26#39;s bar called DJ%26#39;s Dugout.

Hope this helps, have a fun and safe trip!

    The Swede,

    Cheap accomodation near Qwest Center

Hi, I will be flying in from Singapore to Omaha next May to attend the AGM of Berkshire Hathaway. It will be my dream to meet Warren Buffett. However, I am travelling on a shoe-string budget. Hence, I would be grateful if anyone can advice on a cheap but decent motel/hotel in downtown Omaha which is near to the Qwest Center where the AGM will be held. Basically, I am trying to extract the best value for money deal - cheap but comfortable and close to Qwest.

Please advice and I thank you in advance.

    Cheap accomodation near Qwest Center

The Ramada Inn Airport and the Sleep Inn %26amp; Suites are probably the lowest cost and closeest to the Qwest, but not exactly walking distance.

Both are under a $100 a night and may have shuttle service from the airport.

    Omaha in Thanksgiving with kids

    Hi,

We%26#39;re thinking of going to Omaha (from KS) for couple of days. We have two kids 1.5 and 5. The weather is kind of cold, so I doubt if we could do much outdoor.

Other than the kids museum, what else is good thing to do there with kids. Where would be family friendly hotel to stay?

    Any special resturants?

    Omaha in Thanksgiving with kids

The zoo has a great deal of indoor exhibits including a rainforest, a desert and aquarium.

The Holiday Inn on 72nd and Grover Street has just recently opened an indoor waterpark.

    Omaha in Thanksgiving with kids

Take a look at www.MomsOfOmaha.com for things to do in Omaha for moms, kids and families. There are forums where area moms talk about their favorites and lots of lists by area of interest. They have several restaurant deals, too, so you can save money.

    Basketball game

Going to watch the NU vs KU B-Ball game in Jan staying at Harrahs Council Bluffs. How are the rooms?

    Basketball game

    Hey KU.

They are pretty basic hotel rooms, but nice enough.

Are you staying that far to be in a casino? It%26#39;s about 50 miles away from Lincoln.

    Basketball game

Harrahs is fine if you are staying in Omaha. If In Lincoln, stay at New Victorian Suites, formerly Quality Suites. 48th and O street. Nice room, 60-70 bucks, 402-464-4400

    Yes staying there for casino

Yes there is a Water Park

There is a Water park at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Omaha,NE the address is 3321 South 72nd St

    Phone is 1-877-863-4780

It has a huge water park! Visit the website www.cocokeywaterresort.com

    Have Fun!

Yes there is a Water Park

Yah, there is a waterpark, but read the reviews.........the hotel is disgusting, poorly run, and the waterpark lets everyone in, even if they are not staying there. You should also know that the local news station did a story some years back about the infestation of rats and roaches at this hotel.

Yes there is a Water Park

There is an outdoor waterpark of sorts at Mahoney State Park off of I-80 near Ashland.

That being said , you will not find a really good quality water park or amusement park in Omaha at all - it really is not a touristy town in that regard.

Omaha or Council Bluffs outdoors in May/June

I will be in Omaha for a weekend in late May or early June -

I%26#39;m looking for uniquely Omaha experiences especially those with a chance to be outdoors.

Are there hikes, nature areas along the Missouri (or elsewhere)?

Perhaps good biking (and a place to rent)?

I will have a car to get around.

    Thank you.

Omaha or Council Bluffs outdoors in May/June

I%26#39;m interested in seeing these answers too, as we%26#39;ve never been to Omaha.

Omaha or Council Bluffs outdoors in May/June

Biking - the area lakes have concrete trails and there is a network of trails through the city ( Papio Trail ) . Do a google search on %26#39; Omaha Bicycle Rental %26#39; and you will find a lot of places like the Bike Rack that rent.

The Omaha Trails website has a lot of references:

    http://www.omahatrails.com/

Desoto Bend up north might be a nice hike - look for eagles....

The bike trails site is great. Thank you.

Now all I need is to find a reasonable bike rental.

Welcome to my home state of Nebraska! In Omaha there is a bunch of things to do, you should definitly visit the Henry Doorly Zoo, it%26#39;s amazing and great for children! visit this website www.omahazoo.com

Halfway between Lincoln and Omaha, NE, just off of I-80 at the Ashland Exit, you can find an annex of the Henry Doorly Zoo—The Lee Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari. It%26#39;s kind of a Drive-through version of the zoo, without the lions and tigers (there are bears, oh my, but they are in an enclosed area so there is nothing to fear!) Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for kids under 12. The river city star is a nice cruise boat ride up the Missouri, feat. lots of fun aboard. If you haven%26#39;t found a place to stay yet, try the Omaha Convention Center%26#39;s Holiday Inn, feat. Coco%26#39;s Water park, visit this site www.cocokeywaterresort.com

    Have Fun

I really liked the Lauritzen Gardens. (sp?)

The River City Star is nice experience, river boat that takes various trips up and down Missouri river. www.rivercitystar.com

They also have what they call retro bikes to rent.

The annaul ';Taste of Omaha'; is the first weekend in June (6th - 8th)

    www.tasteofomaha.info/TASTEHOMEPAGE.html

There%26#39;s usually some free concerts at night and there are quite a few vendors from all over Omaha.

Thank you for the suggestions. Anyone know of bike shops downtown? That%26#39;s the missing item for me to take advantage of the trails.

Old Market Bike Rental 402-341-4555. 1220 S 6th St, Omaha, NE.

Not in downtown but the closest I could find other than the above:

    Olympia Cycle
