Planning visit to Omaha and Lincoln in May

Our family is planning a week road trip from South Dakota to the Lincoln/Omaha area. My wife has family in the Lincoln area. We have a 6 and 8 year old. We need some advice on hotels, dining and attractions that are all kid friendly. Thanks in advance.

The Lincoln Children%26#39;s Zoo is a good choice. When you come to Omaha, don%26#39;t miss the zoo and the Children%26#39;s Musuem.

Your kids are the perfect age for the latter, but if you were going to do both the zoo and museum, I would take them on two different days if possible. The zoo would take nearly a whole day, and I think would tire them out too much to enjoy the museum.

Mahoney State Park (between Omaha and Lincoln) may be a great destination for your family. Lots of family friendly things to do and you may even be lucky enough to snag a cabin as a place to stay. In that area there is the SAC museum, Omaha Zoo%26#39;s Wildlife Safari park and of course the park itself. Look into these things as they may be worth your while. The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is world class. It will take one FULL day to see everything at the zoo. Check to see if the Omaha Royals are in town (Kansas City Royals AAA afilliate) I can%26#39;t speak much to Lincoln sights as I live in Omaha.

When in Lincoln, some choices are the Lincoln Childrens%26#39; Museum is 3 stories and built within the last 10 years. Also, you could tour the capital, which is free and they give free guided tours. They have lots of experience giving tours to kids, ask to go to the 14th floor and look around the city. Other things would be the NE History Museum, $2.00 suggested donation, gives the history of the state in exhibits and other exhibits; roller skating museum; Germans from Russia museum; Pioneer%26#39; Park is a great place to hike, have a picnic, and see the small herd of buffalo and small herd of elk; a water park is at 27th and Highway 2.

A brand new Holiday Inn Express is at 84th and Highway 2.

What type of food do you like? Some restaurants have kid%26#39;s eat free, Grandmother%26#39;s night is Wed. Val%26#39;s is on Tues. go to the one on 35th and Holdrege, otherwise you are limited to the buffet at the location on 70th. When our kids were that age they never wanted to eat very much.

We hope this helps, but don%26#39;t be afraid to ask more questions.

A must see is the Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City, just hour drive from Lincoln. Great historic site and some fun for kids, orchard and activity center, www.arbordayfarm.org .

Omaha has a riverboat excursion that doen%26#39;t involve gambling...River City Star!

Omaha%26#39;s Durham Western Museum is in beautiful old UP depot, stuff for train lovers and history buffs.

Tour of BoysTown, Omaha, is very interesting. Don%26#39;t forget Henry Doorly Zoo!

Have the family watch the kids and take an afternoon drive to James Arthur Vineyards, just half hour from Lincoln. Taste some wine and enjoy their beautiful deck. There website has list of activities including live music on fridays.

Definitely some good advice here.

Lincoln water park isn%26#39;t open in May, so cross that off your list.

Great local restaurants in Lincoln are Lazlos, Fireworks, Venue, Wilderness Lodge, Billys, The Steak House, The Oven (Indian), and Valentinos and Runza are always favs, and while most restaurants in Lincoln are family friendly, the last two are particularly so.

In Omaha, the zoo is NOT to be missed. Your children will love it, and so will you. Plan on a full day. It is always nice to catch a Royals baseball game in the evening, as they share the same parking lot.

The water park in Lincoln (Star City Shores) opens May 30, 2008 for the season.

There is an airplane museum between Lincoln and Omaha. There are small lakes between Lincoln and Omaha.

We love Lincoln.

Restaurants.. I agree that Wilderness Lodge is good. I don%26#39;t know if kids will appreciate it. Sunday buffet usually doesn%26#39;t require a long wait.

Don%26#39;t forget Lauritzen Gardens:
